A Guide to Cannabis and Its Uses

The science underlying cannabis is complex, but we'll try our best to break it down for you: Cannabinoids, which make up more than 120 of cannabis' chemical components, are the plant's main active ingredients. Of all the cannabinoids, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have received the greatest attention and study. CBD is a non-intoxicating, non-euphoric component of cannabis that you may have seen in the form of oils, gummy candies, beverages, and other items for medicinal reasons; THC is responsible for the "high" that many people identify with cannabis.

What health benefits might be expected from using CBD?

There's no denying that CBD's meteoric rise to fame has spawned a whole new business; at JWU, we even offer a degree in "Cannabis Entrepreneurship." While more study is needed to determine CBD's full medicinal potential, first findings are very encouraging. Here are seven scientifically-established CBD health benefits.

The reduction of blood pressure is priority No. 1.

In a 2017 study published in JCI Insight, researchers showed that CBD reduced blood pressure in humans. It lowered their blood pressure in response to mental arithmetic, isometric activity, and the cold pressor test, as well as their blood pressure at rest.

Reduce inflammation

A research out of the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research found that CBD helped lessen inflammation and the neuropathic pain that comes along with it.

Relapse prevention for substance abuse

A 2018 study discovered that CBD can be useful in helping people who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction. A preclinical trial with lab rats determined that CBD reduced the stress-induced cravings, anxiety and lack of impulse control that often cause people to relapse.

Affective Disorders

People have used CBD for a wide variety of ailments, but anxiety seems to be the most popular. One research reported that CBD showed promise in treating a variety of anxiety disorders, including GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, OCD, and PTSD.

5. Treating gastrointestinal (GI) disorders

CBD and other non-psychoactive cannabinoids were proven to be useful in treating and preventing gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses such IBS, IBD, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and more in a recent research. CBD's ability to reduce inflammation is crucial for alleviating and avoiding symptoms.

Seizure suppression

CBD has been studied as a possible treatment for epilepsy and other seizure disorders for decades, and a new study confirmed the substance's potential for alleviating epileptic symptoms and decreasing the frequency of seizures.

Fight against cancer, number seven

CBD has several anti-cancer properties, including the prevention of cancer, treatment of tumors, and enhancement of the immune system; it has also been used to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.

More benefits than these seven are continually being discovered via study and testing. We see the students in our new Cannabis Entrepreneurship program as being instrumental in shaping the future of the cannabis business.
