The Scarlet

Situated high above Mawgan Porth on the north coast of Cornwall, between pretty Padstow and non-stop Newquay, The Scarlet is a modern eco-luxe hotel squarely aimed at grown ups. Rooms have a cool natural aesthetic and private outdoor space with sea views, while the restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients for creative and whimsical dishes. A cliff-top hot tub and log-fired sauna complete the picture.

There are 37 rooms here, split into categories from 'Just Right' up to 'Indulgent' and couples' suites. The design is light and airy, with a nod to the local landscape (rock pools, sea mosses and wildflowers). But don't worry, your room will still be stylish, with everything from the paint on the walls to the towels and robes being sustainably sourced.

We stayed in the Just Right category, and although it was small it was perfect for two. We were immediately taken by the fact that the bed was in the centre of the room, allowing you to gaze out at the views. We also loved the bathroom, which was beautifully designed to keep the connection with the show-stopping views - the bath is in the middle of the room, rather than being hidden behind a door, and there's plenty of natural light.

The cliff-top spa is an absolute dream, with the sound of the crashing waves lulling you into a state of deep relaxation. Sit back in the secluded hot tub and gaze out at the beach, or go for a refreshing dip in the cold natural pool filtered with reeds and algae (warning: it is much colder than the sea). You can also book one of the many Ayurvedic inspired treatments on offer – these are called 'journeys' and last from four to six hours.

There are lots of other things to do here, including surfing, a yoga studio and a cliff-top bar where you can relax with a glass of wine while taking in the view. We also enjoyed the delicious lunch at the restaurant, which is made with a focus on using local produce and sourcing healthy ingredients.

The eponymous woods in this Netflix mini-series could have been a truly creepy backdrop, but it falls short of the mark thanks to a lack of visual flair and a repetitive ambient score that pipes up too often. There are some twists and turns but overall this is a slow moving story with few real thrills.

Harlan Coben has a knack of writing page-turning books that translate well to the small screen and Safe is no exception. However, his latest effort, The Woods, is less successful. Despite a solid cast and some trademark twists, it struggles to create the compelling drama that fans would expect from such a renowned author.
