Both Apple and TikTok have declined an invitation to testify at a congressional hearing at the United States Congress regarding their ties with China.

TikTok is a social media video app developed by the Chinese company ByteDance. It runs on both iOS and Android. The video app allows users to create and share short music, lip-sync, comedy and talent videos that are three to fifteen seconds long. TikTok was launched in September 2017. The company ByteDance also launched the social media video app Douyin in September 2016. TikTok and Douyin are basically the same social media video apps but they are run on different servers in order for the company to comply with the censorship restrictions of the Chinese government.

Republican senator Josh Hawley organized a congressional hearing with the intention of investigating the relationship technology companies based in the United States has with China. The congressional hearing wants to determine if these relationships have any national security issues. Senator Josh Hawley tweeted that he has invited both Apple and TikTok to testify in the congressional hearing. TikTok stated that it was unable to send an appropriate representative on such short notice. TikTok further stated that it was committed to work productively with the United States Congress. Apple, on the other hand, stated that they had no comment on the invitation.
