Waterproofing of wooden watches: myth or reality?
Wooden watches are not what one might call waterproof champions. By nature, wood is a resource that reacts badly to contact with water. However, in order to prevent this slight flaw from being detrimental to these fashion accessories, the wood used is pre- treated . Thus, some of these watches are designed to withstand, to some extent, bad weather.
Depending on the model, they have an estimated degree of water resistance either in atm (atmospheres), meters (m) or feet (ft). In spite of this, it is not recommended to leave your wooden watch in contact with water too often and for a long time. The damage could be irreversible.
How is water resistance ensured?
The water resistance of wooden watches is made possible in the laboratory. The objective is to study the wood before subjecting it to quenching conditions with a pressure greater than the static pressure. Then, to protect the wood from damage that can be caused by its contact with water, tung oil is applied. All this will therefore have the effect of limiting the sensitivity of this material to water. Thus, splashes or drops of water from a rain that caught you by surprise will not be enough to damage your beautiful wooden watch.
Cleaning a wooden watch: with or without water?
The cleaning of wooden watches unlike other types of watches is quite special. When you see the buildup of residue, you need to clean up . For this, you will need a cotton cloth or cloth that you will slightly wet. Then use it to rub the dial and the strap of the watch for a few seconds. For hard to reach parts, you can use a cotton swab.
Also, it should be noted that wood generally tends to take on a matte and weathered effect as it ages. To allow your watch to keep its shiny side, you can apply a little protective oil suitable for wood. Beeswax or lemon oil also helps protect the device against damage, wear and humidity.
