We all watch videos, series, look at pictures on Pinterest to find motivation in our lives. Personally, I love motivational quotes. They usually make me smile and feel like I discovered something that I already knew but in a way that I didn't know I could be. It makes me feel like I'm stronger. It literally encourages me.
Nonetheless, sometimes it becomes redondant, like it was trying too hard to get me out of this despair pit that I put myself into. One other thing about them is that very often, even though I decide to "chin up" or "hustle hard", I don't quite know how to do that while I'm sitting in an auditorium writing. And one thing that always stuck with me was "be yourself".
First of all, I always had a problem with knowing who I was. I know I am something since, you know, I'm here. But the process of discovering and little by little being conscious of who I am and who I'm not was always harder than getting good grades, listening to the teacher, being polite, doing my chores and all the requirements to be a "socially accepted human". I mean I can list a lot of things about myself, how they affect me and what I think about them. But I never seem to grasp exactly the "me".
Second of all, saying "be yourself" is like saying "1..2..3..now breathe!". Great! Now I'm thinking about the fact that I'm breathing and now I cannot breathe properly because I am self-conscious about it.
Huh. Maybe the first person who said "Who are you?" or "Be yourself" or "think about who you are" ruined me being me. They may have made me self-conscious about it and now that I'm thinking about it, I can't stop thinking about every single move I make.
Maybe what we really need to say is, be OK with your past and your present even though you would have liked to do it another way and you wish you weren't such an awkward person and you didn't almost fall miserably in front of your crush. Because whatever you do or say or think doesn't define you. You have to keep in mind that you are built by your life, your circumstances as well as your life is built by you: your decisions, the attention you give to certain aspects of your life, your point of view on things. You can't just go: hello, here you go "this" is me.You are unity of so many things. Bergson, a philosopher, explained very well music by saying that notes seem to be next to one another on the sheets. Yet, if you take them one by one, you will not have what we call a melody. In order to hear it, you have to play them together, as if "in a breath" so to say. They mix and blend together and all form one rythm, one sound.
What I'm saying is that you are so many things. You are not just your purpose, not just your likes and dislikes, not just your grades and talents. You are so much more because all of that is united in you and you become a melody. That's why, I say "Be real. Be You.". Be confident about your originality, don't question it. Believe in your potential, no matter what.
You know those strangers who build your imagination? Those people who you just wish you knew?
