More limited than the ladder, the stepladder is made up of at least three steps and can have up to twelve steps. Several heights, materials and qualities of finishes exist. The stepladder is ideal equipment for all small daily tasks or DIY jobs. It is fitted at its top with a platform, and on certain models with a tool holder attached to the guardrail. Foldable and easy to transport, the stepladder can be used both indoors and outdoors.
What are the different types of stepladders?
Choosing a stepladder will depend on your needs. Don't go for a high-end model if you limit yourself to dusting the tops of your furniture. Conversely, make sure to equip yourself with a robust and safe model for more intense activities, or requiring the handling of heavy or bulky tools.
For simple jobs: the domestic stepladder
If you do simple jobs (washing windows, changing light bulbs, etc.) or reaching high places, you will opt for a domestic stepladder. Smaller, lighter, inexpensive, it has narrow riveted steps (about 8 cm) and non-slip pads (on some models). It will be suitable for common tasks which require a short period of use.
For heavier work: the DIY stepladder
If you do technical work (painting, primer work, wall drilling) more regularly and requiring a greater height, you will opt for safety step ladders for seniors. Combining comfort (tool shelves, lighter aluminum structure), safety (deeper non-slip crimped steps, locking system), and solidity (increased resistance to greater loads). It will provide better stability, ideal for DIY work.
For professionals: the intensive stepladder
If you are a professional, for example, in the building trades, mass distribution (shelving, cleaning ...), theater or stage (light settings ...). Orient yourself to the professional stepladder. Strong and rigid, it is made of oversized aluminum or anodized aluminum (more resistant to wear) which allows it to remain stable while supporting heavy loads. It is the safest in terms of safety (stabilizer bars, reinforced steps, and uprights, larger non-slip pads, anti-tip gate, and safety strap). Complying with EN131 safety standards, it will be intended for professionals looking for a guarantee of quality.
Safety and standards related to the use of stepladders
EN 131 standard
The EN131 standard defines the quality criteria for the design, resistance, and minimum dimensions of the product guaranteeing the safe use of professional stepladders, ladders, and platforms.
Requirements of standard EN 131:
Maximum load limited to 150 kg.
Minimum profile thickness: 1 mm (steel) and 1.2 mm (aluminum)
Presence of anti-spacing devices, non-slip surface for rungs, steps, and platforms
Standard NF EN 14183
Standard NF EN 14183 specifies the requirements relating to stepladders, staircase-type stepladders, and dome-shaped stepladders. It includes design features, dimensions, materials, performance requirements, test methods, and appropriate uses. This standard does not include ladders and stepladders defined by standard EN 131.
Requirements of standard EN 131:
Maximum load limited to 260 kg.
Minimum thickness of steel profiles: 0.9 mm (steel) and 1.2 mm (aluminum)
Presence of anti-spacing devices, non-slip surface for rungs, steps, and platforms
In addition to the standards, the NF and GS labels can be added, which check compliance with the criteria of standards and decrees.
What are the technical criteria that define the choice of a stepladder?
The height of the work to be done
Measure the ceiling height as well as the ideal height to carry out your work. The maximum working height must correspond to the height of the stepladder platform to which approximately two meters will be added. It is a decisive element in the choice of your stepladder.
The material
Steel, epoxy steel and more often aluminum are the materials that make up the entry and mid-range. Oversized aluminum and anodized aluminum are reserved for high-end models. Aluminum is a good compromise because it guarantees strength and lightness.
The options
There is a wide choice of accessories and options that improve safety and/or working comfort. Wide non-slip steps, non-slip pads, hooks for accessories to be attached to the guardrail, double stepladder, ramps, casters. It's up to you to select the options that interest you!
The price
Another important element in decision making: the price. First of all, you need to properly assess your actual usage needs. All accessories and options have a cost in addition to your original purchase price. Sometimes it is better to invest in a step ladder which is certainly more expensive but which will meet your requirements in terms of comfort, safety, and durability.
