Common Wedding Cake Headaches

Info

Here are a couple of ideas to save yourself a couple of common headaches that many experience with their wedding cake.

1) The headache of the melted cake. Remember that if you’re getting married in a warm month, it’s a good idea to turn on the air conditioning in the reception area well before the cake is delivered.

Unfortunately, many times it will not be on in the reception hall due to high energy costs. It’s important that you ask about this prior to booking the hall so you know whether or not you need to turn it on.

Usually, having it on about two hours before the delivery of the cake should do, unless it’s extremely hot, in which case you might want to allow three or four hours. Failure to do this might result in the dreaded melted cake syndrome.

2) Another all-too-common headache: finding out too late that something is not right with the cake delivery. Maybe they didn’t bring the right accessories or equipment.

The best way to avoid this is to take names! Make sure you get the name of who to contact in case of emergency on the day of the ceremony. Usually, just the fact that you asked for this name will put them on notice to get everything right.

But if something does go wrong, you can get in touch with that person fast, and hopefully save the day.

The Best Cake Decorator

How do you pick the best cake decorator or designer for your wedding? For all of the advertising options in the 21st century, truthfully, word of mouth is still the best way to go. You should be able to get good advice from your married friends, relatives or co-workers.

If you simply cannot get good advice from your acquaintances–or you just don’t trust their advice–you’ll have to shop by yourself, comparing both price and quality.

If you’re having your wedding catered, your caterer will probably offer to provide the cake. Resist the temptation to accept this offer without first checking other options.

Often, you can save a lot of money by getting the cake from someone else, preferably somebody who specializes in wedding cakes. Not only that, but often, the cake will look nicer when coming from a professional designer rather than a caterer, who caters all manner of events, not just weddings.

Don’t start shopping around until you’ve decided what you want your cake to look like, as well as what your wedding colors will be and what the facility colors are.

You should also have an idea of what the temperature will be at your reception hall. And don’t forget to have a good idea of how many guests you expect, as this will dictate how many slices you need from your cake.

Finally, make sure to view samples of cakes your decorator has done in the past. Ask for samples that approximate what you’re looking for. Using a well-thought-out plan such as this will make sure you find the decorator who is best for your wedding.
