Different Types of Therapy for Mental and Emotional Problems

Info

Therapy is a form of treatment that helps the patient with mental and emotional issues. There are different types of physiotherapy performed by expert and trained therapists. Each type has its advantages but sometimes does not necessarily work for everyone. In this article, we will discuss some types of therapy used for resolving mental and emotional problems.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy treatment is a way to help people with mental illness and any emotional difficulty. Psychotherapy helps the person eliminate or control the symptoms causing discomfort and tension so a patient can perform better and heal efficiently. The different problems that can be treated with psychotherapy are difficulty coping with daily life, trauma, medical illness, the grief of losing someone close, depression and anxiety. It involves discussion, counselling, treatment, medications and different practices.

The different types of psychotherapy work better with particular problems or sometimes may be used in combination with other therapies and medications.

What are the Types of Psychotherapy?

Here are six popular types of psychotherapy that work better with specific mental or emotional problems. Let's look at them.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This type of psychotherapy is used to explore the person. The psychotherapist uses different techniques to check the relationship between the individual and his thoughts, feelings and behavior. With the help of this treatment, a CBT therapist uncovers the unhealthful thought patterns of the patient. After the assessment, the therapist develops some constructive ways of thinking differently. These struggles of patient and doctor often develop a positive outlook.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

It is a short term therapy that helps the patient understand the issues that are causing troubles. It can be grief, changes, conflicts, and other problems related to someone. This therapy enables the person to express emotions, improve communication and accept the facts. This type of treatment is effective for people trying hard to cope with depression, anxiety and hypertension.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

It is similar to CBT therapy but focuses more on regulating emotions and accepting uncomfortable feelings. It helps the patient find a balance between acceptance and change by learning new skills and finding ways to cope with unpleasant situations. This therapy is helpful for patients who are feeling depressed and anxious enough to experience thoughts of suicide. Now it is used for treating different conditions such as eating disorders, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This therapy aims to help a patient cope with past driven negative patterns or behaviors. This therapy involves free talking with a therapist about the incidents that happened in the past. This session helps the therapist to identify the patterns of behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. After some time, a patient can become able to overcome these issues. It helps treat anxiety, depression, and BPD.

Psychoanalysis

It is the more intense type of psychodynamic therapy. This therapy usually takes more than two or three sessions a week.

Supportive Therapy

Supportive therapy uses encouragement and guidance to help the patients stand on their own. It enables the patient to develop self-esteem, reduce anxiety, improve social skills, strengthen coping ability, and improve community functioning.

Conclusion

For the treatment of a person experiencing mental or emotional issues, there are many types of therapy available to help them work through these issues. Any specific type of therapy is more effective for some than others. You must know that if any type works for one person may not work for another. Make sure to meet therapists to know what type of therapy is right for you.
