Fur Staining In Dogs

The majority of dog owners who have a white-furred dog might be knowing a lot about fur stains, like specific areas on their bodies that turn a darker shade like brown or red.

These patches aren’t actually harmful to the dogs but they can be indicators of some other health issues for the dogs.

What are the stains chemically?

The fur staining is originated from a chemical compound known as porphyrin.

The compound has iron molecules that are spawned by red blood cells breaking.

They excrete from the body via feces, saliva, and tears too.

The yeast Malassezia, which causes ear infections as well as skin infections is also the reason for the brown stains on the fur.

So if you were wondering, different colors of stains are caused by different things.

Various causes of stains

Eye staining

The health issues that are the cause of the stainings differ a lot. They could be because of choked tear ducts and infections of the eye caused by bacteria or fungi.

The hair surrounding the eyes can lead to a surplus of tears which are bad for the health of the eyes. A lot of issues around the eye can lead to porphyrin stains.

Staining around the mouth

Dental health issues or too much saliva can cause a lot of staining around the mouth. Excess saliva can result in the dogs not being able to eat properly and leaking down the sides of the mouth resulting in more stains.

Sensitivity to things

Dogs can be sensitive to particular foods or other such things like humans too.

When they come in contact with them and allergies are created, they tend to lick the affected area, leaving saliva which if not cleaned, will stain.

Certain breeds of dogs are more sensitive to these things so they could be taken extra care of.

Treatment

Certain antibiotics and other natural supplements can help with the treatment of stains. They don’t always help, so the stainings should be taken care of whether it is red or brown.

The best advice you could get for these things is from the Veterinarian. So go to the vet to help your dog with these issues.
