Four pass interference calls on defense, down by 11 at the half, and that’s all it took for Gardener Minshew to solidify his name in the Heisman conversation.
Welcome, Cougar fans to the sportsjunkieblog.com post-game recap for your Washington State football team.

If you told me the Oregon game would be a one-sided affair and Stanford would be a shootout, I would have thought you were crazy.
Yesterday, they went to battle with the Cardinal and came out on top just like coach Leach drew it up. Let’s take a closer look at the mayhem that ensued on the road.
Did I mention this game was going to be a shootout? Yes, yes I did. The first quarter ended with two scores apiece and we were definitely in for a high-scoring ball game.
Stanford took advantage of Washington State’s lack of production in the 2nd and led by 11 at the half.
The Coug offense came out firing in the 3rd quarter and tied the game at 31 at the start of the 4th.
The Cougars then put up another score to take a seven-point lead, in which Stanford came right back to tie it at 38-38 with 1:25 left in the game. Enter Minshew’s Heisman moment.
3rd and 2 at their own 33-yard line, Minshew throws 32 yards downfield to Jamire Calvin who is tightly covered by two defensive backs.
The man has ice in his veins. This amazement led to a 42-yard field goal to seal the victory for the Cougs, 41-38.
Blake Mazza, the freshman from Texas took center stage to put that field goal through the uprights like it was a routine chip shot.
What looked like a game that could have got extremely ugly, turned out to be a triumph for the WSU football team.
Gardner Minshew threw for 438 yards with 40 completions and three touchdowns. Yet another stellar performance by the man with the mustache.
Two receivers finished with more than 100 yards and that is Dezmon Patmon with 127, and Jamire Calvin for 102 yards. Both running backs continue to do their part and more, game in and game out.
James Williams finished with 79 receiving yards and two rushing touchdowns, while Max Borghi added a receiving touchdown to his resume.
On defense, Peyton Pelluer had himself a productive game with seven tackles and a sack.
Staying with the defense, Stanford averages 25 points per game and WSU allowed them 38.
They committed a number of penalties that could have easily been avoided and they would have won by a dozen.
I wrote in my pregame post that they needed to make just enough stops to let the offense score enough points to win the game, and that is exactly what they did.
A win is a win, and that’s all I could as for, but they can’t keep letting the offense bail them out, which they have nearly every conference game this season.
Overall, this was one of those games I was extremely worried about and I am thrilled that the Cougs came out with the win.
The Cougar faithful showed up in full effect on the road with over a thousand fans cheering strong. WSU sits at 7-1, at the top of the Pac-12 and they clearly control their own destiny.
They now need to take it one game at a time because the next three opponents are not to take lightly.
Next week, they come home to take on the Cal Bears, who knocked off Washington at home on Saturday. Stay tuned for my pregame post and as always…
