Google CEO Dishes on Android After Honeycomb

Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave a preview and rough (very rough) timeline of some of the happenings Android users can expect during 2011.

During a Q&A session at the Mobile Word Congress, Schmidt was asked about what has become a pressing issue for Android users and developers: How will Google remedy the fragmentation in its operating system(s) between the 2.0 (smartphone) and 3.0 (tablet) variations?

AndySchmidt's solution is Ice Cream Sandwich, which rumors indicate is the next planned Android OS release that will consolidate the features of Android OS's 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 Honeycomb. Schmidt did not explicitly refer to Ice Cream Sandwich, instead saying that the uniting release would be named after a dessert food and would start with the letter I.

This wasn't exactly new information, as Schmidt just let everyone in on Google's naming strategy/running joke that astute (and, really, not necessarily that astute) individuals would have figured out by now.

Starting with Android 1.5, releases of the OS have been named: Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0/2.1), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), and Honeycomb (3.0). Schmidt made no such claim, but it seems likely that Ice Cream Sandwich will continue the 3.X line.

Still don't get it? The letter I follows the letters C, D, E, F, G, and H.

Schmidt also illustrated the point that new versions of the OS are released on a six-month basis, so expect the unification of smartphone and tablet Android OS's to come half a year after Honeycomb rolls out (which should be pretty soon, with the Xoom only days away).

Schmidt also demoed the Android Movie Studio, a video-editing app that will be included on Honeycomb.
