Guy Ritchie refused to work with firearms

In an interview with Newsweek, Jake Gyllenhaal and Guy Ritchie shared the details of the filming process of the action movie The Translator, which takes place in Afghanistan. As it turns out, Ritchie decided to stop using real firearms on set after a tragic incident on the set of the Alec Baldwin western Rust that cost the life of cameraman Galina Hutchins. When asked what kind of weapon replaced real machine guns on the set, the leading man Jake Gyllenhaal answered:

“I guess this is more a question for the producers, because they are responsible for this choice, but I can say that we used airsoft guns. It gave us creative freedom - primarily because we could be in the line of fire and everyone was safe."

The "soft pneumatics" used in airsoft looks realistic, imitating real machine guns, and at the same time shoots plastic balls.

Ritchie backed up Gyllenhaal's words, noting that the film industry will now have to take into account tragic incidents on set, such as the aforementioned Galina Hutchins case, or the infamous Brandon Lee death on the set of The Crow:

“The rules of the game have changed. From now on, we do not use real weapons. This is our first shoot without him, and I must tell you, we were all very relieved.”

As for the case of Galina Hutchins, last week it became known that Alec Baldwin was cleared of the charge of manslaughter, and the filming of the western, which was suspended in October 2021, resumed on April 21.
