How to Fix a Leaking Sink Drain Trap

Install a new trap

Installing a new trap for an out-of-place or leaking kitchen sink drain is one of the initial repairs to be performed after your sinks begin to fail. Removing the old trap gives you easier access to the main line, but it also eliminates the option to easily install a newer trap with a flexible hose. When your sink drains are clogged, especially in areas where there are heavy usage times, it is important that timely and regular maintenance be performed on both the main and secondary drain lines. Otherwise, costly damage can occur, which may prevent you from having easy access to your bath tub or kitchen sink in the event of a flood.

Make use of a high-quality

It is necessary to install sink traps that are made of high-quality materials because they will be able to withstand frequent use and heavy-duty use. These drains are manufactured with high-quality joints that connect the trap to the pipes. These joints should be made with good quality hardware because they are exposed to water. If the joint is made with poor quality hardware, leaks can occur in the trap very quickly. This is something you don't want to experience while trying to repair the leaks in your plumbing system.

Turn off your main water supply

The first thing you should do when you begin to see water dripping from your stainless steel kitchen sink pipes is to turn off your main water supply to your house. Next, you should locate the trap that connects to the kitchen sink pipes. You should see water coming from the trap, so you know it is connected correctly to your plumbing system.

Turn off the electricity

To get started, you need to turn off the electricity at your home's main switch. Once this is done, you should disconnect the main sewer line from your house's main sewer line. Then, you should remove the trap from your kitchen sink plumbing. You should also lift the trap and see if the gasket surrounding the pipes is damaged. If you see signs of damage, you should replace the gasket before you can begin fixing the problem.

Slip nuts should be loosened

Next, you should loosen the slip nuts behind the trap. For this process, you should use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the nuts. Once the nuts are loosened, you should remove the nuts and the slip nuts from their respective holes in the pipe. You should remove the trap completely and set it aside. Now you should install the new kitchen sink that you have just installed.

Reconnect the sink hose

After that, you should reconnect the main sewer line to the kitchen sink. Next, you should check the other pipes that are connected to the trap. If you notice leaks, you should change or add more compression nuts to those pipes. If the leaks continue after you have added more compression nuts, it is likely that the trap is leaking because the clog in the drains has caused the leak.

Check the drain stopper

To determine whether you have to tighten the compression nut or not, you should pull out the drain stopper. If the stopper comes out easily, it indicates that you do not need to tighten the nut anymore. Meanwhile, if the stopper becomes difficult to pull out, it means that the hole is leaking. However, in this case, it is better for you to tighten the compression nut. You should remember that it is better to spend more money on fixing the problem than to waste your time and effort on changing the plumbing if the problem continues.

Clean the sink area

After you have successfully fixed the problem, you should clean the area around the sink. The reason for this is so that you will be able to avoid any ugly plumbing problems in the future. Furthermore, the area will be free from any sharp objects or edges so that it will be easier for you to pass all the cleaning solutions through the pipes and kitchen sink. Also, the process will be easier for you if you do it at night when it is dark outside.
