How To Get Rid Of Kidney Stones

There are many opinions on how to get rid of kidney stones, and some methods work for some people while not working well for others. Some of the ways to get rid of kidney stones involve usually natural methods, while others require outpatient surgery or a hospital stay. Which treatments will work best for getting rid of your particular kidney stones will depend on the types of stones they are, how severe or large the kidney stones are, and where they are located within your urinary tract system.

Let’s look at various ways to get rid of kidney stones.

1. The first option usually preferred by doctors and patients alike is water. Lots of water. As long as your kidney stones have not blocked the kidney, have not created an infection, or are not in a position that can cause you to go septic, your doctor will likely recommend you try this method first.

Water gets rid of kidney stones by trying to flush them out of your system. By drinking lots of water, the pressure from the urine build-up can often cause the stones to move along to your bladder, and be expelled from your system when you urinate. The process is sometimes painful, but it can be the least severe way of getting rid of kidney stones.

Unfortunately if the kidney stone is too large, it can fully block the flow of urine through your ureters tubes. This can make the urine back up into the kidney and cause a life threatening situation that must be dealt with at the hospital immediately.

2. Cranberry juice. In some cases simply replacing the water with cranberry juice can help break up the kidney stone while also providing plenty of fluids to help push the stone pieces out of your system.

Both the water and the cranberry methods of getting rid of kidney stones can take several days to a week to work, so your doctor will probably want to keep a close eye on you during this time.

3. Lemon juice. This tends to work the best for most people, because the lemon juice often dissolves the kidney stones within 5-15 hours. Many doctors aren’t aware of this treatment, and those who are tend to simply recommend that you drink “lemonade”. If however, you simply go and buy some lemon flavored drink at the store, that will not work.

You need to use real lemon juice. Either squeeze a lemon, or buy concentrated real lemon juice. Drink at least two ounces every hour until the pain from your kidney stone is gone. The stone itself will not often pass intact, so you may not think you’ve gotten rid of the stone. Usually though, the stone breaks up and is passed in the form of much more smaller, gravel-like substance instead.

4. Medical procedures. There are several medical procedures which are used to get rid of kidney stones. Each one has their good points and bad. One can be done on an outpatient basis, and it involves directing special shockwaves at the area where your kidney stone is located, to help shatter it so that it can pass normally. Another procedure involves placing a tube, called a stent, into your bladder and feeding it up into your ureters tubes to help the kidney stone pass through.

This is just an overview of course, of how to get rid of kidney stones. There may be other home remedies that you’d like to try, or your doctor may recommend different medical procedures that are more appropriate for your particular kidney stone problems.
