Steel Lighting Co are fortunate to have been involved in many barn light projects. These structures can be converted from steel frames to more modern designs or they can still benefit from a sympathetic lighting design. While we follow the same design principles as for other houses, there are additional challenges due to high vaulted ceilings and low ceilings. You may also find older barns listed, which can bring additional design considerations and constraints.
Even more important is planning your lighting well in advance
Barns can be difficult to light. These structures can be difficult to light and require careful cable routing. For listed buildings, innovative lighting solutions may be required and support from the larger project team. It is important to plan ahead, test solutions and minimize change throughout the project.
Fittings that can handle the space's demands should be used
Some barns have vaulted ceilings that challenge our preconceived notions of what is required in a "domestic light fitting". It is important to have the right light output, glare control and discretion.
Get creative when fixing locations
Planning early allows for a coherent approach. This includes integrating the wall mounted light, floors, joinery, etc. It takes careful planning and creativity to achieve stunning results. Ground recessed uplights shine upwards, and LEDs have a better output. This makes the floor a great option for lighting barn features. There are also places that require lighting but are difficult to light. We have developed customized mounting options that allow us to use tiny, barely-noticeable fittings to provide just the right accent light for particular features.
In large, interconnected spaces, lighting control can be a huge help
The lighting control system greatly simplifies the process of using lighting in large multi-functional spaces. A simple lighting control system controls all lights in the barn. Each zone is lit as necessary and lighting scenes can be called up from any keypad. Lighting control is different from conventional switching. You can control the lighting and dimming using any keypad location.
You can control your curtains and blinds with lighting control systems.
Large windows in barn conversions can make it difficult to control blinds and curtains manually. Lutron's electric blinds are easy to use. They can also be programmed to open/close at specific times of the day or simulate occupancy.
Lighting for stone barn conversion
Our task was to create a warm, modern, slightly industrial, but not minimalist feel. The main space is one connected space. There's a kitchen/dining/snug and a living room on the mezzanine. Lighting must be functional, beautiful, and comfortable.
Light the cozy, snug area
The family snug area's most distinctive features are the stone wall and the window frame. The problem with the window frame was how to install lighting without drilling into the stone. Although the vaulted ceiling is beautiful, it's not the best place to mount fittings.
Small display lights mounted on stone sills can be custom-mounted using a mounting system
We used a custom track that features miniature LED spotlights and one power supply to avoid drilling into the stone sill. We were able to select the location and number of spots along the track thanks to the custom-made nature.
One space is used for the kitchen, dining room, and dining area. The shelving is custom made with linear fittings that highlight the tiles and provide enough power to be used for task lighting. To create a wash on the floor, low-level wall washers were installed to the island. High power uplights frame and highlight the stone doors arches.
