As a beginner, you can be able to grow corals that are easy to care for and maintain. Corals don’t like sudden changes in the environment and water parameters.

When it comes to the material of the tank, glass and acrylic are the perfect options. Most of the aquarists use an acrylic aquarium with a sump and overflow. A sump is a second tank that is presently hidden underneath the main aquarium. Adding this will helps in increasing the total amount of water in the system which provides better stability for your corals.

Tank Setup for Growing the Corals:

Once the tank is ready, it is essential to prepare the things like proper equipment. It consists of rock placement, pouring the salt water, setting up enough lighting, maintaining the correct water parameters, etc.

Saltwater:

For growing the corals effectively, it is important to pour the right water into your aquarium tank. You can buy the readymade pre-mixed saltwater from the local store or you can make it on your own. If you are a beginner, it is recommended to buy aquarium water. On the other hand, making saltwater by yourself by using a RODI unit which uses reverse osmosis is also an easy task.

Selecting the Rock and Its Placement:

Placing the rock is important because it is where you are going to grow the corals on and it also determines where you can place the corals. There are several types of rocks available for reef tanks. Among them, live rocks, artificial rocks, and base rocks are the popular ones.

Lighting:

Lighting is also an important aspect of growing the corals in your reef tank. The corals you will be growing are photosynthetic, which means they need enough light to make their own food. Also, it directly influences the colors of the corals. Soft corals like mushrooms, zoanthids, etc require 50 to 150 PAR, whereas hard corals like small polyp stony corals need 200 to 500 PAR.
