How to Raise Money for Special Needs After School Care

There is a serious shortage of special education teachers across the country, and many school districts are looking to the state for help. Unfortunately, many of these school districts are not aware that they can turn to special needs organizations for funding to hire qualified teachers in their school districts. But the cold hard facts are that there simply is no money. However, there are a number of creative ways that school districts can tap into for special needs funding, such as through special needs after school care programs.

In the past, many states have had special education programs that were funded by gasoline tax stickers. The gasoline tax is based upon the estimated fuel mileage driven every year. Because of this tax, drivers pay a portion of the cost of special needs and disabled persons in local educational facilities. In an ideal situation, every state should have a similar tax fund, but most states only pool gasoline tax money with very few states actually spending it on their special education programs. Other special education funding comes from Medicaid programs.

An annual meeting between a group of parents and their school district to talk about funding for special children takes place. During these meetings, the board of directors of the school district will discuss how best to implement special education funding to make sure their district can provide all of the special needs children that enter its doors each year. In some cases, the board will negotiate with parents on a payment plan that makes sense for both the district and the family. In other cases, the board may seek professional assistance from a special needs organization that has experience working with district administrators.

One way to make a special needs funding program work is to put together a "compulsory purchasing group" with parents and special education professionals. At these meetings, the members of the group discuss what they can afford in special needs funding for the upcoming school year and set up individual fundraising plans to pay for the items on their list. Parents are typically very appreciative of their input and are willing to work with the other members of the group to come up with a fund-raising strategy that raises enough money to help all of the children in the district receive the resources they need. Once the fundraising group finds a good plan, it can often times raise a large amount of money in a single day and provide the funds needed to purchase all of the items on their list.

Another way to get help from the local special education community is to contact your local chamber of commerce. Chambers of commerce are usually involved in business activities and tend to have regular events where business owners can bring representatives from their companies to present and promote their businesses. Chances are, if you belong to a chamber of commerce, you will have an opportunity to network with other business owners in your area who are also looking for special education teachers and support staff. When you approach a chamber of commerce, you may be able to find yourself becoming an invited guest speaker at an upcoming special education event. Your participation in such an event could provide you with the networking opportunities you need to begin networking with other special needs educators in the area.

The money you can raise through private Ala donations or through grants from your state's department of education can make a big difference in how well you're able to serve your special needs students. Donating to a special needs organization helps you get your name out there and build recognition for your work in teaching special needs students. You can also expect to receive many positive comments from other parents about how grateful they are for the support you've provided them with in allowing their child to attend one of your after school care programs. Regardless of how you choose to fundraiser, working with others in your community to support their special education needs makes your efforts stand out and can generate a significant amount of money for your cause.
