How to Write a Good Expository Essay

Info

An expository essay is simply a style of essay that tends to explain, exemplify, explain, or otherwise interpret something in such a way as it becomes clear to readers about its meaning.

Thus, it can be an expository analysis, critique, or exposition about an idea for further clarification. In other words, an expository essay usually presents some information or argument, then leaves the reader in suspense regarding what comes next.

An expository essay often differs from other styles of essay in that it tends to use more 'deduction' type arguments to support its point. Look here https://www.wiseessays.com/college-essay for example, in research-oriented essays, you might easily demonstrate that some phenomenon occurs because of a particular cause and effect relationship.

However, in expository writing, you'll use indirect arguments to prove your point.

For instance, if I believe that X caused Y to occur, and Z is the result of X, then we can reasonably conclude that Y must have occurred because of X.

Or we could argue that Z's value as a product of X is derived from its production of value in the market - in this case, we are assuming that there is some underlying productive market for Z.

We can still use indirect arguments to show how we arrive at these conclusions, but they are more difficult to refute because the evidence is somewhat circumstantial (it comes from a chain of reasoning, etc. ).

The purpose of any good expository essay - whether it's a research essay a debate essay, or a literature review essay - is to engage the reader in some kind of discussion. Usually, you will ask the reader to make a connection between your topic and some piece of personal experience or knowledge.

Once you have made this connection, you then try to show how your hypothesis or theory is related to things that the reader already knows or has argued about.

(I've written about this aspect of expository essay topics before, and I'll discuss it again here: where there is significant disagreement among scholars, you should tend to defer to their views. Otherwise, you may risk creating a sense of intellectual hostility.)
