Impact of Fusion of Pop & Rock on the World

Fusion is a broad term for types of music that fuse two or more styles in a solid coalition to create a fusion of the genres. In the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus and exams, specific fusions may come up in the improvising session skills section. So, in this post, we're going to look at two famous fusions of styles: jazz funk and Latin soul.

It cannot be denied that popular music across nations is influenced mainly by Anglo-American pop/rock aesthetics. Classics by Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix have had a phenomenal impact worldwide, influencing the history of pop-rock over half a century from the emergence of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s to a variety of contemporary fashions and trends ranging from rock, soul and funk to hip hop, indie, and metal.

In the context of globalization, there is an inherent quality of cross-pollination in the field of popular music blurring national boundaries, a cultural diversity that bases itself on shared technologies and 'logics of eclecticism' such as seen in pop-rock music, especially electric instrumentation, diffusion of styles and genres, legitimation discourses, and the emergence of ethnic rock.

Going beyond the standard view of the inherent qualities of the slick commercial and formulaic form of pop-rock, Motti Regev, Professor of Sociology at The Open University of Israel, has provided here a theoretically sophisticated account of pop-rock as a vibrant genre of social and cultural change owing to its 'global diffusion' and 'artistic legitimation.'

The Basic Differences Between Pop & Rock Music:

● Pop music focuses on vocals and beats, while rock focuses mainly on instruments like bass and guitar.

● Pop music's essential elements have not evolved much like rock which has evolved into subgenres.

● Rock identifies with a particular subculture, while pop tends to cut across audiences.

● Rock music is often made by a group playing a particular instrument, whereas pop can be by a single artist or a group of singers.

One of the bands "Doubting Tomas," a rock band from US, has been producing and composing since 1980 and has delighted audiences initially in Germany and now throughout the US. In their most recent single, "Stop Bitch'n Around," they have combined dark pop and alternative rock elements to create a wholly original sound that features bass, synths, and live instruments like piano and electric guitar. All the while connecting the song's lyrical ideas with the crystal-clear and seductive vocals.

When Doubting Tomas band was making its first impression with its unique talent, nobody knew that a new wave of music would come your way, and soon the new genre of music was introduced. The impact of genre on the listeners is unexplainable as people who listen to music are for many different reasons. Still, when two different genres are merged, that shows the connectivity of different backgrounds of humans, the creativity of the people making that music, and the acceptability of the listeners as they are not only listening to it but accepting it as it is.
