Jenny and Britanny

Jenny was the topper in class. Brilliant, bold, understated, and yet not understood by many. She kept to herself, and this was probably because of that sharp, searing intelligence which was both her best friend and worst enemy. She could read people like others read books : with unnerving clarity, yet others could not read her, as she was not overtly social, and she was an enigma and a mystery to most people. Perhaps the reason was self-explanatory, as she could read people so well, she did not want to mix with everyone. She was an excellent mind-reader, with a sharp and cynical understanding of human nature and a mind which was capable of great feats of magic.

Britanny was the wallflower, the introvert, the complete opposite of Jenny. She was a total failure at reading people, mostly due to poor observational skills, and not due to lack of intelligence. If she observed long enough, she would probably arrive at the same conclusions as Jenny. But her senses were not as sharp as Jenny's, or maybe she was wired differently.

Jenny was protective of Britanny for this very fact. She realized that she could be sympathetic and yet not feel pity. Pity wasn't empowering. She realized that Britanny was a nice person, but was maybe not her best self when the former met her. Yet, Britanny trusted her and Jenny kept the one secret she entrusted her with.

Friendships can spring up between two most unlikely people, in the most unlikely of circumstances. But theirs was a friendship between opposites, or maybe they were more similar than they thought, maybe they had similar vulnerabilities.
