Just Like Fire

Revenge. That’s all she ever wanted. She didn’t care how rich she was now. She didn’t care about the high grades that she gets in school. It’s always been revenge that wanted the most.

When she was young, her mother died. The police said it was suicide, but she herself saw what happened. It clearly was not suicide. It was a very fine day. She was playing in her room, singing and talking to herself just like every kid does. Then, she heard a shrilling sound. It came from her mother’s room. She wasn’t afraid to go there and see what was happening. The door was slightly ajar and she carefully peaked through the small opening. Her mom was lying on the bed, bleeding. Gashes marked her arms and blood ran down her skin. Her father stood in front of her mother, holding a Swiss knife. He got hold of her mother, grabbing her by the neck. She was gagging and writhing to get away from the man’s hands, but it done her no good. Allie stood by the door, horrified. She never saw what happened next, it was too painful to watch. What had her mother done for her father to do things like that? She ran to her room, scared that her father might find her lurking down the hallway. She hid inside her cabinet. The next she knew, an ambulance’s siren was wailing outside. Her father made it look like it was suicide: he put a rope around his wife’s neck and put the knife in her pockets. Allie was too dumbfounded to say anything to the police, so she ran away. She ran away thinking to herself: I will have my revenge.

Over the years, she stayed with her grandparents. Even they don’t know what truly happened. Only Allie knows what was lurking in the past. Her father kept in touch with her. At first, he tried to bring her home but she wouldn’t budge. Anger swelled in her heart. She needed to make him pay for what he did and she was ready to do it now.

She agreed to meet with her dad at their old house, with his new family. Rage boiled up inside her. How could he have killed my mother but then live with a new one?, she asked herself. She arrived early at the house. The house was different. Physically. For Allie, all she could see was her mother’s body hanging from the ceiling. It was time for her to do what she has wanted to do. But how could she do it without ruining the whole family?

They ate dinner peacefully. Her dad’s new kids were all smiles, except for one. He was not really her dad’s son. He was a step son, having the same age as her. He was looking smug and emo. Wearing an all-black ensemble, blonde hair almost reaching his shoulder. Clearly, he didn’t like Allie’s dad, his step dad. The boy, Cam, stood up and left the room angrily. The room tensed. After eating, Allie went to the bathroom to start her plan. But, on the way, smoke filled up the house. The heat intensified. What was happening? This was not part of her plan! The smoke thickened and she couldn’t see much. She crawled on the floor and searched her way out. There was no way to save the others. Finally, she reached the front door. She got out quickly. She was almost burned. She almost died. The house was in flames. No screams were heard. Does that mean… they’re dead. They’re dead. She didn’t know what to feel. How did it happen? Her question was answered when she backed away from the house and saw Cam leaning against a tree outside the house. “Why did you do it?” Allie asked.

“I couldn’t take it anymore. I saw him hurt mom so many times. And I saw how you looked at him. You’re eyes were filled with rage. I knew about what happened to your mom, and I’m guessing it wasn’t suicide that happened. So, you’re welcome”, he said with a shrug.

“Idiot. You killed not just my dad. You killed your family.”

“That wasn’t really part of it. Killing all of them. I tried to go inside and get them, but it was too late. So, I can’t do anything anymore.” The fire truck and the police came. Allie didn’t want to be involved in this anymore. She was done. Her revenge was done for her, though not exactly as she planned. “You deal with your own doings, Cam,” she said to him and he replied with a nod.

She looked up at the ash falling from the sky like snow. With a final sigh, she turned and walked away, not looking back at what she was leaving behind.
