It was a dark and stormy night
The moon and stars
Were out of sight
The wind was loud
The night was cold
But out in the darkness
Walked a maiden bold
She held up a lantern
Full of shivering light
And walked deserted roads at night
Her hair was long
And black and curled
Her eyes were darker than night herself
She went to and fro in the storm
Her pale throat hoarse from calling out loud
Her face was white
Her body weak
And still she searched on
Unceasingly.
"Josef!" ,she called
"Josef, my love,
"There's a fire in the hearth
And food on the stove
And I've been searching for you
So desperately
Won't you come in, my dear
Stay awhile with me? "
The raging winds snatched up her voice
And threw it against the mountain's side
The chilly rain had drenched her clothes
And yet still she searched on, fair maiden bold.
And yet, something was not quite right
Something was wrong about those dark, dark eyes
And if you were to watch her from somewhere near
You'd see her vanish as the moon appeared
"Josef! ",she cried
"Josef, my sweet! "
And ran alongside the churning sea
She looked behind trees
And boulders wide
She searched for boats
Coming in with the tide
But no matter how loud she called
Or how high she held her lamp aloft
She never saw her love
Her sailor man
Didn't know his ship
Had never found land
And at last her body
Could give no more
Her strength failed her
And yet, the storm still roared
She fell back against the wet dark earth
One hand stretched out towards the seething surf.
And it is said
On dark cold nights
When the wind is loud
And the stars out of sight
You'd see her walking on deserted roads
Still calling for her lost drowned love.
