She rivals each daring foe
Each boastful eye who seeks
Attention that blunders with the sun
From the mountain's crimson peak
Upon the earth where she shines
Her mournful glow's delight
To guide the wary path of stars
Of creatures and men alike
Above the sea and hovered near
So seemingly upon Earth's cheek
The mountain tides rise and fall
And settle quiet and meek
Over fields and yonder land
Her queer moonlight would but dance
Against the sparkling of grass and trees
All of nature it would entrance
And unlike her boastful brother sun
A humble queen was she
Who appeared in silence and in the dead of night
To whisper dreams to accompany
And in the darkness where none would be
If not for spite and malice
There she guides with heavenly light
From the tempting, poisoned chalice
And yet the evil as much a foe
To her elder brother sun
Was used against the lunar light
Opposed to everyone
So none would think the night secure
Amidst the hurl of ghosts
Of crime, of lust, and of fear
One of evil's greatest boast
Fear the dark for what is unknown
Thwarts its every corner
Worry that the touch of night
Is forever yours to wander
So the moon's raw perfection
Won't serve its caused delight
For what we think becomes of it
Is but the evil's sight
Fear the dark, fear its wallow
The taunt of evil's blow
But never fear the dead of night
A home for Her to show
