Maria and Bulls-eye

"Hey Bulls-eye" said 5-year old Maria, with a smile been escorted with light red cheeks and her hair being adorned in pigtails. The Little Retriever puppy would run towards her, licking her, making her feel tickled. Mr and Mrs Dietrich came out and smiled at the friendship between the individuals of different biological identities, who live like a single being.

It was the first day of Maria of schooling. Mrs Dietrich was with Maria, standing at the sidewalk, a little away from their house. Just then, Maria's eyes fell upon this Light Brown Puppy who was pitifully walking, or to be more elaborate, trudging along the sidewalk due to its hunger.

Maria turned to her mother and asked, "Mommy, Why is that dog walking like that?" Her mother, a philosophy professor at the local college, said with a thin smile, "No one is there to take care of that dog, Maria. This is the real world..." Maria looked puzzled and bit her lip. Mrs Dietrich knelt down and said, looking straight into her small daughter's eyes, "Maria, hope is the only thing which makes people join each other. This dog is in dire need of care and happiness. Can you think of yourself without us walking alone?"

"No never Mommy. I can't live without my Barbie dolls!" said Maria, with a tinge of fear in her voice. Her mother chuckled and said, "Maria, we all should live together like a family, which this pup falls short of. Do you have the heart to take care of it?" Maria looked towards the pup, who was sitting on the sidewalk. Her heart was like sort of trying to escape from the rib cage and come out. A small tear erupted from the ends of Maria's eyes. Her mother noticed it and said, "Wait here" and crossed the street. She went to the pup and took him up. The pup sort of whimpered. Maria jumped up and clapped with a cute smile on her face.

Mrs Dietrich brought the pup close to Maria. It was hanging from the hands of Mrs Dietrich, looking with its black eyes. Maria tried to touch him, but his mother had the pup away from Maria and said, "It is roaming for days, it will be dirty. You'll come back and we'll play with him after he's been cleaned. Can you think of a good name?" "Can we name it Bulls Eye? I like its eyes very much.." said Maria with a smile. "Yeah, good name it is. Bulls Eye..!" said her mother, shaking the pup lightly.

Just then the yellow school bus of Maria's school came down the street. Mrs Dietrich stood up. The bus stopped, with the gangway in front of them. "OK Maria, have a good day..!" said Mrs Dietrich, hugging her daughter and kissing her on the cheek. Maria smiled and went to the bus, getting a seat with another girl child of her age. They smiled and it was evident that a friendship has been consolidated.

The Bus whirred its engine and began to move. Maria said from the bus, "Bye Mommy! Bye Bulls Eye!" Her mother waved her and lifted Bulls Eye from the ground and showed it to Maria.

24 year old Maria's eyes moistened. Her family photo was on the wall in front of her. Her parents were in their formal dress standing aloft, with teen Maria and grown up Bulls Eye on the ground. Their house was in the background.

Trring Trring......

The telephone began to ring. Maria wiped away her tears and went to the telephone and said, "Hello, Bulls Eye Dog Adoption Center. Ah, Ms. Whitegate. What? You are now at? The Intersection at Romulus and Lettrica? I'll just come there, yeah. Your Dachshund is being cleaned now. Okay, I am coming there now.."

Maria kept down the receiver and sighed. She opened the door and walked out towards the street. A huge Gold and Blue arch board was there before the gate, reading,

"BULLS EYE DOG ADOPTION CENTER. Hope unites all."
