Movie Review: Forks Over Knives

Last night I attended the screening of the new documentary film, ‘Forks Over Knives,’ at the E Street Cinema in Washington, DC. I got the invitation on Twitter because the producers noticed that I tweet a lot about healthy eating topics because of my healthy snacks blog and because I’m a vegan and I love cooking and eating and tweeting about healthy food.

Right before the film started, nutritional chef Annie LeCompte from a local, natural food restaurant called, Life stars, got up and spoke about her menu, which includes all fresh, natural, and organic ingredients, and they don’t even have a freezer in the kitchen. She gave everyone in the audience a $3 gift card to the restaurant, and one lucky audience member won a $25. Gift card.

The message of the film is that a whole-food, plant-based diet promotes optimal health. It discusses how the Standard American Diet has lead to a staggering obesity epidemic and it lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. The film traces the work of two researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn who both grew up on farms raising animals for milk and meat production, but who are now championing the cause of the health benefits of whole food plant-based diet. The film itself was excellent, however, I believe that most of the people who need to hear the message of the film won’t sit through it and gain the education that it offers. When the tickets were offered to me by the producers, I was not able to get any of my friends to come with me to the screening after I gave a short description of it. My friends think it’s great that I eat such a healthy, clean diet, but I think they also think that I’m a bit kooky. Most people who have been raised on the ‘Standard American Diet,’ have developed palates that have become infantilized so that all they want to eat is fatty, salty, fried, sweet, or creamy foods. We as Americans are ruled by our taste buds, and those calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods are what is causing Americans to be so fat and unhealthy.

I recommend this movie as a fabulous primer on the health benefits of becoming a vegan. You will learn about what eating so much animal protein is doing to your body and how eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits can reverse many adverse health conditions and make you feel stronger and possibly even live longer.
