Simple Things

Everyone wants something big; materials that are easily seen, catch attention of passers-by, and makes it obvious that you have that certain something. People say these things make them happy, for they think that they are above the others who do not have what they have. They think that if you have this something the others don’t, it will automatically mean that you’re more blessed, happier, and luckier than them.

But they are wrong. It is never in the big, obvious things. Happiness is in the little things.

It’s waking up in the morning smelling breakfast cooked by your mother. It’s being accompanied by your father to school or work. It’s being teased by your siblings to no end and laughing it off afterwards. It’s a message by your boyfriend, whom you haven’t seen in a while, asking to go out. It’s walking in the streets and passing by an old couple holding hands. It’s petting an excited dog in the park. It’s the purring of a cat as it nuzzles your legs.

Happiness can be found even if you don’t have big things that others easily notice in you.

It’s the aura you resonate when people see you.

It’s the state of bliss you can’t contain.

And when people see you, they can’t help but feel enlightened.

Because they know.

They know you have something.

And you’re happy because the others could feel it, too.

Because of you.
