SMS VERIFICATION VS APP CODE GENERATOR; WHICH IS THE BEST?

Most online apps and social media accounts are now adapting to a new mode of verification process. This is because of the widespread number of data breach cases across the globe. Cyber criminals can now be able to steal information from any account thru phishing or hacking which can be harmful to every netizen as their personal and private information will be leaked. Some cases even include stealing of bank account information in which money can be dispensed and charging of transactions using someone else’s credit card. Hence, tech companies have been working together in order to create a method which could help in securing any information that has been linked to an online account.

Most online companies now require a two-factor authentication (2FA) in order to have more options in determining if the person who is trying to gain access is legitimate. This authenticator will serve as the first line of defense for any cyber attacker. Once you log in especially from a new device, you will either be required to input an OTP (One-Time Password) which will be sent via email or mobile phone number or type the code generated by an authenticator app.

What is SMS Verification?

Short Message System verification allows accounts to send directly a one-time password to any mobile device that has either a permanent or temporary mobile number. Many banks, social networks and online stores are following this type of authentication to prove that the one who’s accessing the account is the real owner. There are both advantages and disadvantages in using this factor such as:

- PROS

• The convenience of SMS codes is superb since there’s no need in downloading an app or setting up an account.

• A warning will be directly sent to your mobile number if someone is trying to access your account.

- CONS

• This can however be hijacked thru SIM swap scam wherein cyber criminals will pose as you to request for a replacement of SIM that is connected to your account.

• You cannot receive codes once you go to places with poor network service.

What is an Application Code Generator?

Two-factor authentication does not rely solely on SMS verification. One alternative you can use in getting codes to access your account is thru an app generator code. This app will give you one-time password that is generated from the linked account once you open the app. However, just like SMS, there are also pros and cons under this factor which are:

- PROS

• SIM swapping won’t affect your codes since it will be generated thru an app and not from your mobile number.

• Authenticator apps will still work even without network coverage.

- CONS

• Although this factor is convenient, once the app or server will be hacked then cyber attackers can easily clone your 2FA codes indefinitely.

• You still need to download this app, create and link your account in order to use it.

Conclusion

Both SMS and authenticator apps are beneficial in securing your accounts. The final selection will however depend on the user if which one really has the best convenience to offer.
