Stay?

Info

The question is out of my lips before I can stop myself.

“Will you stay tonight?”

A frustrated sigh interrupts his steady breathing. We already know the answer. He breathes in deeply, mustering patience. “I would love to, but we know I can’t.” His fingers are making lazy circular patterns on my bare back, my own tracing the contours of the elevations and depressions on his bare chest.

“I know,” I whisper against his skin.

I inch myself closer to his body, resting my head on his chest so that I can hear the beating underneath the layers of skin and muscle. The sound is leading me to sleep when the loud ringing of his phone fills the room. He extends his arm to the bedside table and carelessly taps around and answers. “Hey… Yeah, the boss caught me up for overtime again… I’m sorry… I was just cleaning up my desk. I’ll be on my way in a couple of minutes… yeah, yeah… You, too. Bye.”

He gently pulls his arm away from around my body, smoothes my hair and face with his palm and just sits on the bed, not making any movement. I get up and grab a stray shirt from the floor to wear and walk to the chair where his clothes are neatly hanging. I sit on his side with his clothes on my lap. “I’m sorry,” he says, almost sadly.

He stands on the door, ready to leave when he suddenly turns around and strides back to the bed where I sit. He kneels on one knee in front of me and cups my face on both his hands. “I promise you I’ll come back,” he says. His lips on mine muffled the words I have to say. “I’ll come back.” Next thing I know, he is out of the door.

“I know, but it does not mean you’ll ever stay”, I whisper to the empty room.
