Compression testing machine is very common and popular method of testing, which is used to find the force of compressive or resistance of any material. The main purpose of the compression test is to calculate the behavior or response of the material under the load. It calculates the maximum stress of a material which can sustain under the load. Basically, this test is used to calculate the reaction of the product or material when it is compressed.
This testing is done to a rupture or to a limit. When that rupture comes during the testing, then that rupture can be defined by depending on the type of material which is testing. The limit which is used to test the material is either a load limit or deflection limit. There are some results of compression testing such as load at rupture, work at rupture, and deflection at rupture, maximum load, chord slope, stress, deflection at maximum load and many more results.
The sample of this test is generally placed in between the two plates, which then distribute the load which is applied to the whole surface area then the plates are pushed by a test machine. By testing a material, some other parameters are also calculated which are given below:
• Compressive strength
• Yield strength
• Ultimate strength
• Elastic limit
• Elastic modulus
All the materials can observe the force of compressive in many ways depending on some applications and these materials are concretes, wood, stone, brick, polymers, plastics, foam and metals and many other. There are many uses of compression tests which are given below:
• It accesses the strength of the components such as keypads, package seals, bellows etc.
• It characterizes the compressive properties of materials like foam, metal etc.
• It is used to access the performance of products such as the force of a syringe etc.
These above are some uses of compression test. Now let’s talk about types of compressing testing.
• Spring testing
• Top-load testing or crash testing
• Flexure testing or bend testing
There are many benefits of compression testing such as: to determine batch quality; to calculate consistency in manufacture; to assist in the designing process; to reduce the cost of material and accomplish the lean goals of manufacturing and many other benefits are present which are not mentioned. Now let’s talk about some applications of compression testing which are given below:
• Aerospace and automotive industry:
It contains actuation tests on pedals, switches and solenoids and spring testing.
• Construction industry:
It contains measuring the flexural strength and penetration tests
• Cosmetics industry:
It contains actuation force testing of sprays, break strength testing of lipsticks, compaction strength of eyeshadow and testing the force to lotions and creams.
• Electrical and electronic industry:
It contains actuation force testing of buttons and compression testing of LCD screens
• Medical device industry:
It contains 3 point bend testing, actuation force testing, syringe plunger actuation.
So these are some applications of compression testing and to test these the machine used is known as compression testing machine.
