The Top Five Golf Related Movies

Sports movies are a common feature in Hollywood. The drama of real life sport is entertaining, heartbreaking and exhilarating and so it's easy to see why film makers are happy to draw on the sporting world for inspiration. One of the sports that has a surprising number of films based on it is the game of Golf, quite often taking a light hearted approach to the typically serious game. Many golf films have become classics which has helped boost the sport's popularity as well.

5. Follow the Sun

Follow the Sun is a Bio pic of the real life golfer Ben Hogan. Hogan's story is a familiar Hollywood affair with him working as a golf caddy to support his family. After marrying his wife he is encouraged to try becoming a pro golfer himself. The story follows Hogan through his time in the military and returning to become one of the world's greatest golfers at the time.

4. The Legend of Bagger Vance

The Legend of Bagger Vance is a more recent adaptation of a Golf story which originated in book form. The movie doesn't dwell on the book's mythology and spiritual focus but focuses more on the sport of Golf, the main character (played by Matt movie watcher's guide ) and his return from seeing atrocities during the First World War to become a better golfer and man in general. This is all done with the help of his mysterious and friendly 'guide', Bagger Vance (played by Will Smith).

3. Tin Cup

Tin Cup is the nickname of driving range pro Roy McAvoy who after giving golf lessons to a Clinical Psychologist begins receiving counselling from her to help him develop the confidence and drive to become a Golf professional again. Roy decides to try and win the U.S. Open to impress her, many real life golfers feature in the film, perfect for golf aficionados to spot familiar faces.

2. Caddyshack

Caddyshack is Harold Ramis' first film (And would later go on to create Ghostbusters) and stars many American comedy actors such as Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield. The story is of a golf caddy, Danny, who wanted to go to College but his family was unable to afford it and his grades were not good enough for a scholarship. Then his golf club's boss informs him of a scholarship scheme they are running and Danny does everything he can to make sure he wins it.

1. Happy Gilmore

One of the most recent golfing movies and also one of the funniest.Adam Sandler stars as a former Ice Hockey player Happy Gilmore who after being rejected on the ice takes to the fairways to help raise the money to save his grandma's house. Coached by a retired golf pro (played by Carl Weathers) Happy learns to put his hockey skills to good use on the golf course and control his aggression and outbursts
