The Ultimate Guide to Us Custom Data

International products may be subjected to duties (tariffs), taxes (and other fees), which are assessed by foreign customs authorities. You can use the US Customs Data to estimate taxes and duties for more than 160 countries. This global tariff lookup tool is provided by Descartes, a third-party provider. This database is free to use and register for. How do I locate an HS Code?

You will need a Harmonized Code for your product to use this tool. A product classification search engine for Schedule B products is available from the United States Census Bureau Foreign Trade Data. The first six digits from the Schedule B can be used to find the product's Schedule B number. This number can then be converted into the Harmonized Code.

Start your search by entering six digits (or less) of the product code. The U.S. codes are often harmonized internationally up to six digits. You may also find an HS code by using the "tariff text” box in Customs Info Database. Your broker/Freight forwarder may be able to assist you in identifying the product's HS code. You can also contact Mexican Customs to request formal customs rulings.

Customs Info and FTA Tariff Tool: When to Use (they are free)

Both tools offer valuable information about tariffs. You can use either tool, depending on what you need. For an immediate transaction, Customs Info database may be preferred as it has the most current applied and preferential rates. It also contains the most recent HS codes. You can compare the MFN rates in Customs Info. CI will quickly help you determine if it is worth taking advantage of the tariff rate. Sometimes, FTA and MFN rates may be equal (zero), or the preferential rate may be higher in rare cases when MFN rates have been dropped for all shipments. You will also find the relevant local taxes in CI so that you can easily estimate the landed costs (costs associated to exporting your product).
