Many of us question how to seem as amazing on a video call as we do in person while working with what we have at home as we keep our videos on. Don't worry; with a few hints and modifications, you can always seem professional at a video conference.
Put on proper clothing.
Dress as though you were going to an in-person meeting for a video chat – or as near as feasible. We may be working from home, but first impressions are still important. What you put on is almost as essential as what you say. Because you are at home, you may be able to relax a little, but not too much. It's more of a cashmere sweater than a varsity sweatshirt.
When in doubt, always dress up, never down. Know that if you are meeting with the CEO of a bank and they want you to wear a tie at all times, you must still wear a tie! Dress professionally for the sort of video call you're on.
Lighten up your face.
In a perfect world, the greatest room in your home for a video chat would also have excellent lighting. If everything else fails, cheat.
Get two lights and place one on either side of your desk. In this manner, your face will be light from all sides, and artificial shadows will be avoided. Because video quality isn't always the finest, any method will help you generate a strong first impression.
Lift your camera
Place your camera at or above eye level. You will seem more natural if you stare squarely toward the camera rather than down.
If it means stacking your laptop or screen atop some books, go ahead and do it. Just make sure it's not dangerously balanced. You don't want it to tumble over during a video conference.
Make an effort to gaze at the camera or at a screen near the camera as much as possible. Direct eye contact will emerge. Avoid glancing at yourself in the narrow frame of your screen's corner.
Select a backdrop that is neutral
Examine the backdrop for your video interviews. Is there a clear line of sight to your hamster cage or your bathroom?
Both are annoying in various ways and will make you seem unprofessional. Avoid this by using a plain wall or a more professional-looking location as your backdrop.
You don't have that option? When you're on a Zoom call, you may use a virtual backdrop to show a picture as your background. You may also download and utilize free images of virtual backdrops from here.
Examine your technology
Once you've got your setup in place, try it out on a friend or family member. Check that your camera, microphone, and headphones are all operating properly. Make any necessary changes during your trial call so that you are ready to go when your meeting begins.
Check that you have a stable internet connection. If your internet connection is prone to disconnecting, make sure no one else in the house is downloading all 16 seasons of Grey's Anatomy at the same time as your video call. Don't allow your internet connection to derail your plans.
Know how to silence your microphone as a courtesy to others. When you need to talk, immediately unmute yourself and then re-mute yourself. This ensures that no random outside notices enter your video conference.
