Tips for Writing a Cover Letter

Even though the health care industry is growing, job applicants should still expect plenty of competition when applying for a position in this field. Making a positive first impression on the employer is absolutely necessary to secure an interview, and the best way to do that is through a well-written cover letter. Your cover letter is often the first thing seen by a potential employer, and in order for them to move on to your resume and contact information, it's important to catch their attention with that first page. By creating a great cover letter, you increase your chances of gaining the employer's attention and possibly securing the job for which you applied.

There are several helpful hints and tips that can get you started on writing a winning cover letter. Keep these ideas in mind when creating a cover letter for each job application.

1. Keep it clean.

When you write your cover letter, you want it to appear neat and organized. Make sure your header includes the name and address of the employer. Then, leave a line or two after that before you begin your letter. Make sure to separate your letter into paragraphs in appropriate places; this makes your cover letter look organized and easier to read. Use a clear, readable font and make sure there are no tears, folds or stains on the paper if you are sending your application by postal mail.

2. No mistakes.

A cover letter riddled with spelling and grammatical errors looks careless and sloppy to potential employers. Make sure all of your wording and spelling is accurate before sending in your cover letter. It helps to have at least one or two friends or colleagues look over the letter beforehand to help you proofread it.

3. Be original.

Never create a standard cover letter that you use for all job applications. While you may include some of the same information on several letters, you should always customize your cover letter to the specific job opportunity. If you are applying in response to a job listing, use that as a guide to create a customized cover letter for the job. For example, if the job requires certain computer skills and experience in an office setting, make sure you demonstrate your proficiencies in those areas in the cover letter.

4. Be concise.

Employers may have to wade through dozens of applications in order to find the right candidate for the job. They want applicants to create short, concise cover letters that give them a clear picture of your qualifications in just a minute or two. Excessively wordy cover letters should be avoided. A good rule of thumb is to include one paragraph for an introduction, one or two paragraphs to describe your qualifications and interest in the position, and a short final paragraph to conclude the letter. This should keep your cover letter under one-page and brief enough to entice a potential employer to continue reading and move on to your resume.
