It was 10 at night.
I was swinging in and out of sleep. Lying in the bed I was staring at the ceiling. Light from outside had diagonally casted the shadow of window mullions. The room was too warm. I needed some air.
The rusty metal frame gave a mild judder as I tottered up its stairs. When I reached the top a pleasant gust of air went past me. Crossing my arms I began to stroll while my steps were matching the patterns of the tiled terrace. I stopped at a corner.
Beneath me were the mazy streets of the neighbourhood backlit by Sodium-vapour lights. Dogs were roaming leisurely along the main road. Two streets away, around a corner, few guys chatting and smoking.. Ribbons of smoke lingered above their heads before they dissolved into thin air. At the distant horizon the city lights tinted the sky. I climbed higher. The concrete water tank was wide enough. I lay on my back.
Stars weren't all alone that night. Moon was full and sober. Around it few tiny stars half asleep, trying hard to announce their presence. For a second I wondered what the city might look like from up there. Except for the hum of the generator the whole terrace was noiseless. September, 25, 2018 was nearing its end. But, to me it seemed, the remaining hours were stretching themselves and never going to end.
A flight traversed the sky with a mild rumble blinking reds and blues.
I closed my eyes. Incidents of the late afternoon flooded my mind. Along with it came everything since the start. For a month or two, we had already known that ours was going nowhere. We had arrived at a point where every utterance would add more bitterness. We stopped talking to each other. Down the memory lane something was lost.
And the call came.
I didn’t know how to start the conversation. Mind was running many probabilities with words and simultaneously doing a background check on the consequences for the same. A blatant courage struck me and I was about to utter something.
She spoke first.
“How are you?”
“Hmm”
Nothing much I remember after that but the question at the end.
“All these days I’ve believed that we had loved each other. But then something bad happened and… But, Ram, could it be like we had never really loved each other at all?”, she asked plainly.
“Yeah, may be..”
I don’t know why I said like that. It was stupid. May be because I had a thought that nothing was going to matter anymore? Anyhow, I shouldn’t have said like that.
“In case you need anything, you know,..you could ask, okie?” I said.
Our last call didn’t last long. We broke up, formally. I didn’t come as a shock. We both had been expecting that since a long time. But the fake disinterestedness worried me.
I mused on an April evening we spent together. Dressed in red, slightly shy, equally excited, there she was. We didn’t keep track of the time. We dined. We talked. Exchanging glances, in between the coffee sips, we even loved the meaningful silences. Twilight had ascended on the calm and pleasant avenue.
It was time and we had to part. While I was trying my luck taking an auto, she stood on the other side of the road with her mildly worried face dimly lit by the moving traffic. Only women can appear beautiful even when they are worried.
Moving flashes of street lamps going in and out. I tried to rest my eyes on hers while tresses of her hair dangling all over her face. She turned and looked deep into my eyes. I went closer as she leaned into me. I took her hands in mine. I didn’t want that evening come to an end so soon.
A thunder rumbled the sky. I opened my eyes. I had no idea how long I had been there. The terrace had become more cold. It had started drizzling. I stood up and glanced at the horizon. The city lights had become dimmer than before. When I reached the room, it came down heavily. I locked the door and opened all the windows. Chill air rushed inside and swirled.
The clock had struck 12. And I had let myself sleep.
