I haven't seen a paper ticket for an airline flight in years. Yes, I recall how they appeared. They were frequently issued in duplicate and triplicate, and you had to examine them carefully to ensure you were using the correct one at the correct time. I also recall how difficult it was to replace one if it was misplaced before taking off. To check out the Travel2be Review, click here
I recall one particular instance when my family and I were planning a three-week vacation in Europe. We purchased the tickets ahead of time and stored them. And they were certainly safe! We looked for them a few days before we were to leave, but no one could remember where we had put them for safekeeping. We went into a panic.
We eventually had to buy new tickets. The airline cancelled the old tickets but refused to refund our money until we returned the originals. We discovered the original tickets only after we returned from our European trip. We got our money back, but the inconvenience was excruciating. The issuance of an electronic ticket would have made this process much easier today.
Few airlines anymore provide paper tickets, and requesting one may cost you more. Electronic tickets are typically purchased over the internet using your home computer, and the convenience cannot be beat. So, why should you buy electronic tickets online?
It may be the only kind available. Paper tickets are no longer available on some airlines.
You do not need to go to a travel agency or airline office to buy them. When you get electronic tickets ahead of time, you don't have to stand in line with your luggage at the airline terminal to buy them.
Credit cards (and sometimes cash through online bank withdrawals) are still accepted, just like paper tickets. My advice is to always use credit cards because they are safer.
They are simple to find. The records on the internet will be available until each leg of the journey is completed. They remain in the database after purchase for easy access at any time. If you misplace it, you can print another copy online. There will be no more lost tickets.
You will receive immediate confirmation. This is usually done via email.
They are immediately available. You are not required to wait for your tickets to be mailed to you. They can be printed immediately after payment has been received.
Pre-flight check-in is possible with electronic tickets. Most airlines allow you to print your boarding pass up to 24 hours before your flight. If you only have carry-on luggage, you can bypass security screening entirely. Even with luggage, you can usually check it curbside with your electronic ticket or through kiosks provided by most airlines in the terminal.
Most international airlines still require you to check in at the counter before clearing security and boarding, but all of the other benefits mentioned above make electronic ticketing worthwhile.
There will always be those who insist on a paper ticket issued by the airline. It no longer makes sense, however, given the ability to print an electronic ticket instantly from any computer with internet access. Thank the internet and electronic ticketing for their convenience. Electronic ticketing saves you time, which is money.
