What are white noise, pink noise, and brown noise?

Info

If you have a partner who snores loudly at night, you may have been recommended by someone to try the white noise machine as a snoring treatment. It doesn’t prevent the wheezing noise but helps block the distracting sounds to assist you with acquiring good-quality sleep. A white noise device also comes of use for people with insomnia. Research shows that besides white noise, pink and brown noise devices also have a calming effect and relax your body. Here is detailed information about these noises and how they help you sleep.

What is white noise?

Also known as broadband noise, the white noise machine has all the frequencies on the spectrum of sounds you can listen to in equal parts. It uses a mix of frequencies and creates a static-like noise. The resulting sound can be intense and high-pitched, like a fan, air conditioner, or vacuum. Experts recommend people listen to white noise if they wish to improve sleep, lower ADHD symptoms, reduce crying in babies, and enhance work performance.

Although studies have found white noise to affect sleep problems positively, researchers say they need more proof.

What is pink noise?

For those who do not know, pink noise can be described as a constant sound in the background. It aids in blocking the outside noises like that of people talking to each other or cars speeding by on the road. In this way, pink noise, also known as ambient noise, prevents sleep disruption.

Like white noise, pink noise is also produced as a steady hum. But, since it makes use of deeper noises and lower sound waves, it comes off as more gentle and soothing. Also, pink noise has a constant frequency and pitch and helps create a flat and even sound, like that of steady rain, rustling leaves, and crashing waves. Since pink noise has added depth and low waves, it also comes in handy for zoning out higher sounds.

What is brown noise?

The brown noise has a deeper bass-like tone when compared with white or pink noise. Here, as the decibels decrease, the frequency goes up more than it would with the pink noise. Also known as red noise, brown noise is similar to heavy rainfall or a high-pressure shower sound. Some sleep apps use it to offer a grainier and deeper effect.

Sleep experts suggest that brown noise can help reduce the symptoms of ringing in your ears. Also, it improves thinking skills and helps sharpen your brain.

Can white, pink, or brown noise help with sleep?

For some people, the grainy sound produced by the white noise machine helps them fall asleep. Those who listen to it fall asleep faster.

By reducing the difference between the background hum and loud noises, the pink noise machine keeps you in deeper sleep for a long time.

As for the effect of brown noise on your sleep, more research needs to be done. However, if it works for you, carry on.

So, this is all you need to know about the white, pink, and white noises and their effect on your sleep quality.
