What is a waterproofing membrane?

A liquid waterproofing membrane is one that does not come in prefabricated rolls, but is in a liquid state. Its application is similar to that of paint and when it dries, it forms an elastic membrane with great waterproofing capacity.

Several of these membranes have been developed from numerous compounds such as cement, silicone resins, polyurethanes or bituminous and asphalt waterproofing agents.

What is the difference between waterproofing and liquid membrane?

As we have said before, the main difference is how we find it in the market and its application. The waterproofing membrane is usually found in prefabricated rolls, while the liquid membrane is applied immediately, leaving, when it dries, an elastic layer, although somewhat weaker than the waterproof one.

What is better the liquid or asphalt waterproofing membrane?

The asphalt waterproofing membrane is a material used mostly in constructions such as the waterproofing of roofs, terraces, ceilings, balconies, gutters, ducts and a large number of situations.

This type of waterproofing membrane is made up of a self-protective upper layer, then a main layer of asphalt with a reinforcing core and a non-stick film that covers its most superficial part.

That said, as general points, it can be considered that a liquid membrane is easier to apply than an asphalt one. And although both are durable over time, the maintenance of a liquid waterproofing membrane requires less maintenance than asphalt.

However, the use of one membrane or another will depend on each specific case, after analyzing the surface where it is to be placed.

Advantages of Liquid Waterproofing Membrane

A liquid waterproofing membrane has numerous advantages:

1. Easy application: being similar to a paint, its application is very simple compared to the asphalt membrane. It adapts perfectly to uneven surfaces with slopes or vaults because it is applied with a spray gun, brush or roller.

2. Elasticity: one of the main problems is the filtration due to expansion of some materials that are used as a roof when they are exposed to the sun. The elastic capacity of this product makes it a very effective solution.

3. Service life: its waterproof capacity does not lose its capacity over the years. It also does not require maintenance as is often the case with other waterproofing materials. Its qualities include high resistance to external temperatures, aging and the effect of ultraviolet radiation.

4. Sustainable: its composition is more friendly to the environment and contact with the skin is not as harmful, compared to other similar materials.

5. Economic: it is among the most economical solutions. Not only because of the price of the material, but also because of the price of its application, which, because it is easier, has a low cost. It also has a high covering power and greater penetration, factors that help save the product.
