What makes a good product analytics and marketing platform?

We are not in a perfect world. The amount of information increases dramatically whereas the time we can spend on tracking our product dwindles as we have to wear several hats at once. In this blog, we will examine how and why companies like Microsoft, Kaiser Permanente and Emirates Bank make use of Countly to get actionable insights from their products worldwide, and why Countly is the ultimate answer for a product owner.

Recently, I have met an old friend I have known for more than a decade. He was head of product, and was confused about what tools to use to get insights from a product analytics platform.

His company was particularly interested in many dimensions and what data he can get, together with a focus on a consistent flow of information via different channels. There were several stakeholders who wanted to be involved in this business decision, too.

He also noted down several requirements that he seeks from a full featured analytics, marketing information management and performance platform:

I am a product manager and want to be able to see 360 degrees of user journeys, from web, mobile and desktop applications we have. I want to track events, create sales funnels and see trends.

My colleagues from the marketing department want to be able to send timely messages to my users based on their behaviors.

Application development teams would like to get crash reports from web and mobile applications and fix them as soon as they appear.

We need to get immediate emails about reports so we can actively learn what is happening, especially if and when there is a change in sessions or events we collect.

I want to see drop offs via custom funnels, user journey flows and get informed about in-app purchases using extensive revenue calculations, e.g ARPU, ARPPU and such.

Users are in the heart of our application: We want to see and act on each and every user, and view what they have done, without violating GDPR compliance.

I want to work with a vendor that can provide me customized solutions on top of what they provide already, preferably with the help of customized plugins.

I want to have a bird’s eye view of my campaigns and data I receive from my channels with UTM tags.

I said, “fine”. This is what we do. He nodded, and added as a bonus: He also wanted to receive hints, tips and tricks, together with example business KPIs he wanted to track. “We have what you need, in detail” I said.

He was like:

It was a silent moment, as I saw him completely sold.

With a pen and a piece of paper, I have quickly sketched a list of the features we have. Our beloved designer Antonin then gave me a better representation of this design, so I can use it in this blog:
