Why Do Many Students Drop Out of College?

Students could drop out of college for many reasons ranging from financial to personal issues. So, what are the top reasons for students dropping out of college? Here are the top five reasons that you should know.

School costs too much

On top of the list of what causes students to drop out of college is money. Higher education is expensive compared to high school. Furthermore, a majority of students who drop out of college are self-sponsored. Some students feel overburdened by the high cost of education in college. If they are unable to sustain it, they simply drop out to look for jobs. It becomes a big issue if the student doesn’t have external funds to help them cover their tuition fees.

Family issues

There are many social issues that could force a student to drop out. Family issues are among the top reasons why many students decide to quit school. There can’t be a specific family issue that forces students out of school. A good example is when a student drops out of school because his/her parents have divorced. This is not the only family issue that can make a student drop out.

Too much stress

College can be extremely stressful. If a student hasn’t gotten used to this life, it becomes very easy for them to quit and start a new life. Stress in college could be caused by various social and academic factors. Take the example of a student who constantly fails in exams and gets stressed to a level they decide to quit. Another student could be stressed by relationship issues in the college to an extent that they quit.

Emergency

Some college dropouts are unplanned. There could be an emergency that forces a student to drop out of college. For example, a student’s parents may get a job transfer to another country. Such a move will force the student to move with the parents immediately.

Needed to get a full-time job

Because of financial constraints, a student may need to get a full-time job. If the college doesn’t have an online program, the student will be forced to drop out to start a new job. With these harsh economic times, a majority of self-sponsored students prefer to work full-time and study online. If you are interested, you can join a class and get a Fire Inspector certification online. This will allow you to maintain your job and still be active in college.
