While electricity and its applications have become an indispensable element of our homes we live in, the fact is, it comes with its own threats to human life and as well as the physical infrastructure. Electrocution and fire being the two prominent risks linked with electricity, one cannot afford to be neglectful when it comes to safeguarding equipment in residential spaces.
A Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) is one of the many protective measures that can be adopted for safety at home. It is an important safety measure when it comes to the safeguarding of power distribution to different devices/appliances. It can be explained as a current sensing device, which can automatically compute and disconnect the circuit whenever a fault occurs in the connected circuit or the current goes way past the rated sensitivity.
A fundamental aim of an RCCB is protecting an individual from the damage caused by electric shocks or in worse cases, even electrocution and fires. RCCB’s are particularly useful in the situation of a sudden earth fault. The presence of RCCB makes sure that in such cases, the circuit will trip rather swiftly and the person is thus protected from an electric shock. It goes without saying that an RCCB’s functionality helps in protecting the various equipment in the power management system as well.
An RCCB operates on the principle of Kirchhoff’s law, which states that the incoming current outgoing current in a circuit must be equal. RCCB thus evaluates the difference in the current values between live and neutral wires (if there is any). In an ideal situation, the current flowing to the circuit with the live wire should be equal to that of the current flowing through the neutral wire. In case of any mishap, the current from the neutral wire is lowered, and the discrepancy between the two known as Residual Current. On detecting a Residual Current, the RCCB is forced to trip off the circuit.
