It seems that someone over at Yahoo finally woke up from a long nap. The company is looking at acquiring video platform Daily Motion, and just in time since YouTube will likely start charging for some content on its platform.
What? Youtube is going to start charging to access content? Before you put together your poster boards to protest in front of Google Inc., let me explain.
Youtube is looking to charge anywhere between $1 and $5 to access certain channels. It’s kind of like when cable TV first came out. You could get HBO and Showtime in your home for a price, but you were still able to access local channels without paying.
But here’s the $64 question: Will all YouTube content eventually require a subscription?
While the definitive answer is no from Youtube, I’m not so sure. Let me take you back to cable television’s beginnings….

Unbeknownst to the larger population, cable TV was first introduced in 1948. However, it didn’t becomes popular until the 1980’s with the offering of exclusive channels. Today, you’d be hard-pressed to find a home that doesn’t have paid cable.
Fast forward to today and the arrival of the Internet. Many people now are simply getting all their news and entertainment online, without the need to pay $100 a month for cable or satellite TV. Many cable companies are starting to feel the squeeze of this new trend.
Let’s face it, we all love Youtube. Sure you have to watch an annoying ad these days, but it’s still free for now and you can find just about anything on YouTube. But what if you had to pay for it, would there be as many users? Probably not.
Now Yahoo Inc. is in negotiations to acquire Daily Motion, ranked number 22 among video sites in America.
Small business owners and entrepreneurs may be concerned that videos produced and distributed through YouTube may eventually become another bill to pay.
What’s even more important from a business perspective, is if the videos are working to bring in new customers. It doesn’t matters if you’re paying for some form of advertising as long as it’s cost-effective and brings you more new customers.
In other words, the focus should be on results, and an opportunity to become ranked high in the search engines using Daily Motion now maybe something to consider as a business owner.
