17 Things I Learned at 17

1. You will always outrun people and that’s okay. It’s an external sign that you are growing up and ready to venture the real world.

2. There will be times of uncertainty. You’ll always feel like gate-crashing a wrong entrance. Retreat is your only option. But…

3. even though you wanted to give up, you’ll always end up fighting becase that’s what you are. A fighter. You’ll fight until you can. Even there’s nothing to hold on to, you’ll still find something you could hold on.

4. You will feel like you’re alone most of the times but always remember that the big guy upstairs is always with you. He is always greater than our highs and lows. And that with Him, we are not alone.

5. Loneliness is your new bestfriend. By this time, college has been successful to give you a shitty life. You will have gallons of nostalgia as you hear one direction songs that reminds you of your high school bestfriends. Unlike the word one direction, all of you managed to part different ways. Some are busy with school, some are missing in actions, some are far away and some are happy with their new cliques. You miss all the stupid things that you did together. The times where you go to the mall and watch the novel you read a few weeks back. The times where you do each other’s make up everytime you have a date. The countless matchy matchy hairstyles at school that everyone find cute. You miss those times where you fight over petty things. Though you hate it a lot but still, it reminds you how strong your friendship is that it can never be eradicated by the littlest things. Those times where you bae-watch your crushes and those times you found out that he was dating someone else. You cried your heart out that night but you were thankful that you had their shoulders to cry on.

6. Learn to be alone at all times because the only person who could help you, understand you and motivate you is yourself . Ridiculous as it sounds but it’s the bitter truth that we refuse to accept. People will always say that they are always there for you but when you need them most, the gashes inside you just become substantially deeper. You will eventually realize that the countless rants and spurts about how bad your went day, how did awful you felt when you failed your midterms, how you hated yourself for not being good enough and how nostalgic you are because you miss home are nothing when they are blind to see your agony and deaf to hear your head.

7. There is so much more to experience. You will think that you’ve been through the abyss but little did you know you were just in the shallow part of the ocean.

8. Love will be temporary at this time so don’t expect that your present relationship will last that long. There’s so much more to come so stop your tantrums and your endless nights of crying so much and listening to Brian McKnight and Regina Spektor. The right guy will come in the right time so learn to wait.

9. You’ll always feel sad. And that’s okay. The product of feeling too much. Melancholy will always be present inside you and everywhere. You don’t have to worry that much as long as you keep your head high and keep your dreams bigger than your fears.

10. Stress is a natural phenomena that happens to people. And you’ll experience this a lot. You’ll get tired but you’ll get used to it.

11. You don’t have to please people at all times. No. You don’t need to please them. You’re the one who decides for your own good. Don’t listen to what they’re saying especially when dealing with your own problems. You should learn to face the consequences alone. You need to learn the variability of bravery.

12. Food is your new bestfriend. So when you got problems, it’s okay because you got pizza and pizza won’t hurt you.

13. There will be times where you would think that you are not good night. A lot. And no, you are enough. You don’t have to feel guilty when your Father got mad at you when you failed your quiz at one of your majors that reflected a lot in your midterms. You did your best and it’s just really hard because your professor decide to take a shit on your class. You are beautiful even you’re fat, even you’re black, even your eyes were chinky unlike your friends, even you’re the shortest in class and even when your boyfriend broke up with you because he fell out of love. Always remember that love is genuine and has no boundaries. And that  you are more than enough.

14. Family is your priceless treasure. They are the people who wouldn’t give up on you and they will see you through your darkest and will still love you regardless of everything. Even though they wouldn’t tell directly to you, they love you. Those loud blabbers in the morning, those silly pranks, those angry schemes, and those endless family talks speaks a lot. Remember, action speaks louder than words.

15. Not everyone will stay. People do come and go. And that’ll make you feel awful but keep in mind that when a door closes a window opens. Prepare yourself for new things and make room for new people. More or less they’ll make a significant change in your life you just need to be open for it.

16. Changes occur a lot. Your childhood bestfriend could be a stranger in just a year and the girl beside you in your english class can be your new bestfriend in just a week. Time is unpredictable. You wouldn’t know when will things last. So use your time wisely and grab the opportunity because you wouldn’t know if there will be a next time. Don’t be afraid to try new things and risk because that’s how you’ll grow.

17. You are the most important person in your life so never ever feel insignificant. Don’t forget yourself and put yourself above others. It’s okay to be selfish at some times because you, like every other being in this world, feels tired and it’s okay to take a rest. Never feel sorry for being you and doing things for your own good. You are remarkable and worthwhile. Never let people bring you down. You are the star on top of a christmas tree. The lone sparkling star shining above. A celestial.
