Earth. It has many people on it, but not one human knows the true dangers in the universe.
For centries, a gift and a curse was passed down through families. The gift was a blessing and the curse was a curse.
"Move it!" A voice behind Alice made her turn around, barely missing being hit by a guy about her age. Holding his hand was a little girl looking to be about 8 years old.
Alice was a orphan and she knew trouble when she saw it. That little girl was in trouble. Deciding she was going to follow them, she grabbed her bag and went into the woods.
Two days later and one night later, Alice saw smoke from a campfire. She followed the smoke and arrived to see the little girl under a pile of blanket. Although she was sweating, her body was racked with cold chills. Suddenly, Alice sensed she was being watched. When she turned around, she saw the guy from earlier.
"Who are you and what do you want? I know you are here for those witches!" He was taking two steps towards her for her every step backwards.
"My name is Alice and I don't know who you're talking about." She yelped as she tripped over the little girls' feet, waking her up.
"Get out of here!" He bared his teeth, revealing sharp pointy fangs.
"Jake! She...didn't do nothing." The little girl said, shaking badly.
"You don't know that."
"I do." She stood, going over to stand in front of Alice. "Please...let her stay."
"But-"
"For me?"
"Fine. I'm going to go to town to get a doctor. Watch out for strangers." He helped his sister lay back down and turned towards Alice. "If you hurt her, I will hunt you down and kill you."
He disappeared before Alice could say anything.
"He doesn't get it."
"Get what?"
"I won't be here by the time I'm back." She stared at Alice until she looked away from the girl. "I'm a fairy, you know."
"A fairy? As in fairies from books?"
"Yes. For centries we lived with humans. We were different, but we weren't creature thristing for death. We keep the peace, but one day that all changed. The fairies were attacked by dark creatures of evil. We called them witches."
"Is that what Jake thought I was?"
"Yes. He is very protective of me."
"Hmp. Are you two related?"
"Yep. He's my brother. I'm Maria."
"I'm Alice. So, um, how did the fairies survive?"
"Our Queen, Amber, had a very strong power so we called her the Fairy of Light. She would give her life to protect those around her. Queen Amber ended up dying, but not before she killed half of the witches. With her final breath, she gave her power to her four month old daughter." Suddenly, Maria cried out, hands clutching her stomach.
"What is it?"
Maria laid down, hand falling to her sides. "It's nothing."
"How badly are you hurt?"
"I don't know. The witches placed a spell on us that makes us die. Only the healers at the school can heal it, but we're too far away."
Alice look at the little girl who looked like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. "I think I can heal you." She blurted out.
"What? How?"
"I'm not sure, but I can try if you want. I never did it with a human...only hurt animals."
"Try it please."
Alice closed her eyes and placed both hands on Maria's stomach. She thought happy, healthy thoughs like doing something right for the first time. The sun went darker and the air around them chilled. A dark ball of energy came from Maria and into Alice.
"What do you think you're doing?" Jake's voice cause Alices' eyes to fly open. Besides Jake was a man with blury eyes.
"It's okay, Jake. She healed me." Maria jumped up and ran to her brother.
Jake frowned, but turned to the other man. "Go home. You are no longer needed." The man quickly left.
"Isn't it great?" Maria asked, twirling around.
"How'd she do it?"
"I don't know, but I think she could be a fairy. She was amazing. Her name's Alice, by the way."
"Alice? Are you alright? Did my sister preasure you into doing this?"
"Yes and no. It was fine." She looked ten years older, but she smiled. Her blonde hair that usually shone was a dull color and her brown eyes were now black.
"You sure? You look ill." Realizing what that meant, he rushed to her side. "You took Maria's illness and put it inside yourself, didn't you?"
"No, I'm fine." She smiled to prove it.
"You're a bad lier. Maria, get me some water."
Maria had not moved from where she told Jake she was healed. She was staring at Alice, her green eyes wide.
"Maria, come on." Jake lifted Alice up and placed her closer to the fire. Then he turned to his sister. "Maria."
"She's sick because of me."
"No, I'm fine. Just a little tired. It's okay." Alice answered, reaching for the child.
"But now you're sick."
"It was my choice to heal you."
"Okay, we can chat later. Maria, telport to the school and tell them we're coming." He paused and then slowly handed a pack to his sister. "And stay there."
"But-"
"No, stay there. I'll bring her there as soon as possible."
Maria glared at her brother. Then she shimmered and disappeared.
"Where'd she go?"
"Save your strength. She went to tell people we're on our way."
"Why's weren't you this worried for your sister?"
"I was, but she wanted to take her time getting to the school and she couldn't telaport herself while she was sick. Now that you saved her, I can't let you die."
"I'm not going to-" She broke off, her eyes going wide. Her body laid stiff and still.
"Hold on. It'll be okay." Jake quickly put the fire out and then picked up the bag, throwing them over his shoulders. Next, he picked up Alice who was slowly trembling.
"Is it always that bad?" She gasped, trying to recover.
"The first few times it is, but it gets better. Just hold on. You can scream if you want. It may make you feel better."
"No, I'll be fine." Then she looked up. "How are we going so fast?"
Everything was zooming by. The trees, the plants, the stillness...everything was moving so fast.
"I'm a vampire." Seeing her doubtous look, he smiled. "How else do you think we're going so fast?"
"I'm delerious."
He laughted. "You're not yet though you should get some sleep. It's going to be a while before we get there.
Alice slowly fell asleep and they traveled throughout night. When it was morning, Alice didn't wake.
"Alice, wake up. You need to eat." Alice didn't answer and she didn't wake up. "Come on. We're almost there."
Cursing, he began running again, faster than before. A few minutes later they arrived at the school. Healers were waiting along with the headmaster.
"Hurry, she needs help. She won't wake." One healer took Alice from Jake and rushed away. He started to follow, but the headmaster stopped him.
"Wait." She grabbed his arm to make sure he didn't follow. "We have to talk."
"But-"
"She'll be fine." The headmaster said. She was about 60 years old and had gray hair and green eyes. She wore glasses and was short. "Let's go to my office."
They went inside the school and to the main office. She sat down in the seat behind her desk and Jake stood, pacing in front of the door.
"Is it her?"
"The Fairy of Light? I don't know. She healed Maria, but she could be a Healer."
"You like her." It was a statement not a question.
"She saved my sister. Why should I not? She's nice and everything."
"That not what I meant."
"If you mean, do I like her as more than a friend, then yes, but I won't act like I lost my mind."
"Good. Keep me post on wheither it's her or not."
Alice woke because of the pain. It was coming in faster and stronger waves, one right after the other.
"Where does it hurt worst?" A voice asked.
Alice struggled to open her eyes to see who it was, but could not which caused her heart to beat faster and harder.
"It's okay, Alice. They want to help you." The childish voice caused Alice to calm down. "You got to tell them where it hurts worst."
"On...chest...on heart...hurts...can't go...on..."
"Her heart? What does that mean?" Maria asked.
"It means you should leave. This is more serious than we thought. You shouldn't be in the same room." Footsteps led away from Alice.
"But I have to be here once she wakes."
"It should be a little while. We'll have somebody find you the minute she wakes." A door was opened then shut. "Okay, let's begin."
A mask was placed over Alice's face and a needle went into her arm.
"Alice, I'm Healer Ann. We are putting you back to sleep and you have pain medicine going into your arm as I speak. When you wake, you will be a little sore, but try not to move."
"W-what's...wrong?" Alice gasped.
"Nothing to worry about. Just relax and take deep breaths."
Alice took a deep breath, her eyes feeling heavy. Then she saw darkness and she was asleep.
When she woke again, Jake was by her side and her arms and legs were restrained.
"Jake?" Her voice came out high and panicy.
"Shhh. It's alright." He sat forward in his seat and brushed the hair from her face as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Why am I trapped?"
"It's to keep you from moving."
"Can you take them off?"
He stared at her for a minute before moving to release her. Once released, she hurried to stand up, but Jake stopped her.
"No getting up." He sat back down and looked at her. "How do you feel?"
"Better." She looked around the room. "Where am I?"
"At the school. This is where we train all the fairies and warriors."
"Warriors? Is that what you are?"
"Yeah. Guys can't become fairies so we protect them. The headmaster assigned me to be your Warrior." He smiled at her.
Alice shook her head as if to clear it. "Where Maria?"
"Around here somewhere. We can try to find her as long as you promise to take it easy. That spell went straight for your heart."
"At least I'm not dead." She joked.
"That's not funny." He stood and reached for her. "Come on."
Alice placed her hands on his upper arms as he placed his own around her waist. She looked up at him, then back down.
"Okay, slowly stand up."
She swallowed and did as he asked.
"I'm good, I think."
"You sure?"
"Uh-hu." He slowly removed his hands and Alice stood on her own. "Quick question. Why did it affect me more than Maria?"
"The spell will affect the more older ones worse than the younger ones. It was designed to kill any fairy over 18 so the closer you get, the stronger it is."
"Oh." She looked up at him. "Ready?"
"Yeah. One more thing, though..." He moved closer to her, placing his hands on her waist. Jake looked into her eyes, searching for any hesitation. Seeing none, he slowly bent his head, slightly tilting it to the side.
Then sound of someone clearing their thoat made Jake jerk around right when they were inches apart.
"Sorry to interupt, but I need to speak with Jake." The voice said. Alice started to peek over Jake's shoulder when he turned back to her.
"Sit and don't move." Alice did as he asked and watched as he followed the other girl out, smiling at her before closing the door.
She waited a minute, then crept to the door, pressing her ear to it.
"You shouldn't be kissing her."
"You don't know her like I do."
"Like you do? Come on, Jake, you just met her. What do you know about her that nobody else does?"
"I know that she saved my sister."
"What about Bella?"
"What of her? I love Bella."
Those 3 little words cut through Alice, making her realize that Jake could have a girlfriend. She quickly moved away from the door, looking for another one she could escape through.
There was one on the other side of the room and she hurried towards it, her heart throbbing slightly. She ignored it and pushed the door opened.
It led outside. Alice gasped. There was miles of green flowing grass all around the school. There was also a few barns, stables, corrals, pastures, and a whole lot of animals.
She looked behind her. She didn't see Jake behind her so she hurried to the closest stable.
It took her a few minutes to get there and a lot of huffing and puffing. When she opened the door she didn't see anyone inside.
"Hello? Anyone here?"
"Can I help you?" A voice to her left asked. The girl turned towards Alice. "Are you alright? Whose your Warrior? I gonna get help." She started to leave.
"No! Don't leave. I'm Alice and I'm new here."
"Oh. I'm Kayla." Kayla had long blonde hair and blue eyes. She was tall, but seemed proud of it. "Can I help you?"
"Actually, I'm looking for a fast horse. I want to go for a ride."
"Okay. Are you looking for one with long stanima?"
"Yes."
"Okay, then Thunderhead would be best." She walked up to a stall and led a black thoroughbred out. "Just give me a minute to get his tack."
She gave Alice the lead and went into another room. The minute she disappeared behind the door, Alice lead the horse outside and climbed onto his bare back.
Next, she nudged the horse into a trot to warm him up. Then she let him all out, racing to any place, but the school, knowing she had to get away from Jake before it was too late.
When Jake got done talking to Angelica, he went back into the infirmary, but when he got back in there, she was no where to be seen. The side door, however, was wide open.
He hurried to and out it, looking for any sign of Alice. Jake looked around, a small panic building inside him. It was then he saw someone walking around one of the stables. He ran to the person.
"Hey, have you seen a girl looking a little lost?"
"You mean, one looking ill? Yeah, she took a horse from me."
"Ill? How ill?" Jake asked, fear inside him.
"Like she could pass out any second. Said her name was Alice."
"Where'd she go? I'm her Warrior."
"No, but if you find her, I'd like to speak with her."
"Don't worry. I WILL find her."
Alice slowed the horse down once they were a safe distance from the school. She got off the horse's back and looked around. When she realized, they were safe, she sat down, her heart beating wildly out of control.
"Why? Why, oh, why? Every single guy, always has someone else. That or they can't stand me. I didn't think Jake would be another one of those types, but oh, I've been so foolish."
The horse bent his head and blew gently in her face. Alice laughed, tear streaming down her face and blew back.
"Okay, let's go." She stood, wiping the tears away. Then she grabbed the horse's mane, preparing herself to climb on his back when, suddenly, a hand came from behind her, covering her eyes. Alice jumped sightly in surprise and got ready to move the hand when the other hand came around her waist, trapping her arms.
"Who are you?"
The person didn't answer though they did wrap a cloth over her eyes and roughly tied her hands. Then she was released. Alice heard Thunderhead neigh and she gasped as she was pulled upward.
"What do you want?" Her back was against the person's chest, their hands wrapping around her to hold the reins.
The person still didn't answer so Alice leaned her head forward, then snapped it back. It hit the person's chest and they grunted, but didn't stop.
"Hold still." It was Jake.
Alice stiffened and sat as still and quiet as she could. When they stopped and Jake pulled her off Thunderhead. Then he removed the cloth over her eyes, but not her hands.
She blinked at the bright light and once her vision cleared, she realized she was back at the school.
"Why did you run away, stupid?"
Alice didn't answer, but she did glare at him, feeling betrayed. If he wouldn't admit, he had a girlfriend then she wouldn't talk to him.
"Not answering won't help." He took a deep calming breath and released her hands. "I am your Warrior. That means you are not to go anywhere without me knowing."
"You're not my boss." Oops. So much for not talking.
"I may not be, but I still need to know where you're going."
"Why do you care? It's not like you owe me anything?" Alice said, her heart throbbing painfully. She ignored it.
"You think that's why I wanted to be your Warrior? You need your eyesight checked, because right now you are blind."
"I'm not blind. I can see more clearly than you could about half an hour ago."
"What are you talking about?"
Alice stubburnly remained silent.
"If you talking about us almost kissing, that has no reason to be in this agruement."
"That's where the problem all began! Why don't you see that?"
"I don't see how that has anything to do with this. Explain."
"I don't take orders from you or anyone else."
"You are getting on my last d*** nerves. EXPLAIN!"
"You can't make me."
Before Alice could blink, something inside Jake snapped. His hand swung out towards Alice, right for her face. The force of the blow knocked Alice on the ground a few feet away from Jake.
Alice laid on the grass, frozen with shock. When she finally sat and looked up, she saw Jake staring at his empty hand. Then he looked up and across at her.
"Alice, I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me." He turned around. "I'm gonna give you a few minutes to yourself while I take Thunderhead back, then I'll show you your room."
Jake left, leaving Alice to herself. She slowly raised her hand to her cheek and when she removed it, she saw a streak of blood.
He returned a few minutes later and waited until she stood before showing her her room.
"You have room mates. If you need help ask them, I won't be far. There's a bathroom off from your room. The headmaster has some clothes for you in your room. Some of them-"
"Jake, stop. It's fine. We were angry and said and done things we didn't mean."
"No matter how angry I was or am I should not have hit you. For cryin' out loud, I made you bleed and you're telling me it's fine."
"It's just a little scratch."
"Next time, it may not be a little scratch."
Alice shook her head and knocked on the double doors that lead to her room. The doors opened and Alice saw the girl Jake was talking to earlier.
"Hello. Are you our new room mate?"
Alice knodded.
"I can see that you two will get along fine so I'll just go." Jake started to leave when the girl reached out and grabbed his hand.
"You can't go no where. You should make sure she's settled in." She winked at Alice, which only confused her.
"Angelica." Jake warned.
"Oh, knock it off." She turned to look at Alice again and gasped. "You're bleeding."
Alice turned her head so the cut was hidden. "It's nothing."
"No, it's not." Jake said, watching her.
"It was an accident."
"One that shouldn't have happened."
"Whoa, wait a minute. Jake hit you?"
"No."
"Yes."
"It doesn't matter."
"Enough, both of you. Come inside and we'll talk this out." She grabbed both their hands and pulled them into the room, sitting beside each other on a bed. "Okay. Jake, why'd you hit her?"
"I was mad."
"At what?"
"Her. She ran away."
"Alice, why'd you run away?"
For a minute, Alice considered not speaking, but realized that wouldn't help. "Because I heard people talking about something that hurt my feelings."
"Who?" Jake demand.
"What did they say?"
"They said that...Jake loved...someone."
"Is that why you thought I was like the other guys you knew?"
Alice gasped. "You heard me?"
"Of course I did, but you got to believe that I'm not like them."
"How would I know that? I heard the people say you loved someone else."
"Who were they?" Jake repeated.
"Alice? Did you hear Jake?"
"Yes."
"Are you going to answer him?"
"No."
"Why not? I think I have a right to know if someone thinks I love someone."
Alice looked away from both of them so they couldn't see her tears. "You have every right."
"Then why won't you tell me?"
"Because it was you!" She looked at him, tears running down her cheeks. "I heard you two talking. I heard you say you love someone."
Jake and Angelica both looked at each other and then started laughing. Hurt, Alice stood and ran to the door which was being blocked by Jake.
"I am faster than you."
"Just stay away from me." She looked at Angelica. "Both of you."
She threw herself back down on the bed, arms covering her head.
"Alice..."
"Jake, she needs time to calm down."
"But-"
"No. It's been a long confusing day for her. Let's give her a few minutes to herself."
Alice heard the door open and close. Once it shut, she let it all out, tears flowing more frequently. She must have dozed off because when she woke, there was two girls above her.
"W-who are you?" Then she reconized Kayla from the stables.
"I'm Maddie and this is Kayla. From what I heard, you two have already met."
"Yeah. Um, I'm sorry I took the horse without waiting."
Kayla smiled. "It's alright. I understand you had a long rough first day."
"Yeah."
"You want to tell us about it?" Maddie asked. She had short dark blonde hair and blue eyes. She was taller than Alice, but shorter than Kayla.
"It's hard to talk about."
"Just start whenever you can." Kayla replied.
"It all began with this guy."
"It always does." Maddie and Kayla both said at the same time, making them laugh.
"Well, I saved this guy's sister and I think that maybe he likes me, but it could be just graditude and I thought that maybe-"
A knock on the door interupted what she was going to say. Kayla hurried to answer it and when she did, Alice saw Jake was back.
"Is that the guy?" Maddie whispered.
Alice didn't answered, just nodded.
"I need to speak with Alice. Alone."
Alice paled, her eyes widening.
"What for?" Maddie asked.
"None of your business. It is between her and I and you both need to mind your own business instead of butting into mine."
"I didn't know she was yours." Kayla countered.
"Leave. NOW!"
"This is our room. You-"
"It's alright." Alice said, her eyes closed.
"You sure?"
Once again, Alice nodded. Both of them left, but not before glaring at Jake. As soon as they were gone, Jake came over and sat beside Alice who got up and went to a window.
"We weren't laughing at you." When she didn't answer, he sighed. "Alice?"
"It sure sounded like you both were laughing."
"We were, but not at you."
"Then at what?"
"It's compicated."
"It always is." She could see Maddie and Kayla through the window. They were walking side by side, laughing.
"I am not like the other guys you knew."
"You love someone else. You didn't even tell me that. I had every right to know that."
"You do realize that this is only the second day we known each other."
"Which is why you should have told me you had a girlfriend."
"But I don't."
"Don't lie to me. I don't think I can handle it."
Without her realizing it, Jake had walked up behind her. "I'm not lying. The only one I love is Bella-"
"See. You did lie to me."
"And she is my dragon."
As his words sank in, Alice realized she didn't have anything to be mad at him about.
"Alice, look at me." When she didn't turn around, he gently did so. "I would never do something like that. Do you believe me?"
When she nodded, he raised a hand and slowly caressed her cheek (not the one that was hurt). Then he lowered his head and kissed the scratch that ran from the cornor of her right eye to side of her chin. When he finished, he rested his forehead against hers, breathing heavily.
"If you want me to stop, tell me while I still can."
"Don't.
"Don't what?"
"Stop."
He kissed her lips then, putting what he felt into the kiss, all the fear at the thought of losing her, all the horor at hitting her and all the confusion she gave him.
When he pulled away to catch his breath, his eyes went out the window where he saw Angelica, Maddie, and Kayla all watching them, smiling.
"What's wrong?" Alice asked, opening her eyes. Then she followed his gaze and her cheeks quickly flushed.
"Ignore them." He pulled her away from the window and kissed her again, this time more deeply. She sighed and and slid her hands up his chest and wrapped them around his neck.
Then Jake slid his lips down her neck, pausing and taking a deep breath. Suddenly, he released her and turned around.
"Is something wrong?" Alice asked after a minute.
"No, I just think we should stop before we do something we regret."
"Oh."
"You're not mad?"
"No, why would I be?"
"Anything's possible." He paused. "I want you to meet Bella."
"Am I allowed to?"
''Of course. Why wouldn't you be?"
There was a knock on the door before Alice could answer. She went to answer it and opened it to see someone she had not ment.
"Hello, Alice. I'm the headmaster. You can call me Professer Ruby or headmaster if you want."
"Um, hello."
Jake walked up behind her and place his hands on her shoulders. "It's okay, Alice. You're not going to play 20 question."
"No, not anything like that." The headmaster reasured. "Though there is a few questions I must ask you."
"Okay, please come in."
Once they were all sitting down, the headmaster looked at Jake. He nodded slightly.
"Okay, first how old are you?"
"!7."
"Did you heal Maria?"
"Yes."
"Did you know it would endanger your life?"
"I knew there was a chance. With animals it didn't, but I knew that Maria and I were both humans and that could make me ill."
"Where are you parents?"
"Dead. I saw my own mother die and my father was dead before I was born.
The questions were coming faster and faster.
"How long have you been the Fairy of Light?"
"What? Isn't that...wait, you think I'm her? That's not possible."
"Isn't it? A normal fairy would not have been able to heal Maria without having some training. Since this is the only school for fairies, I know that you had no training."
"How do you know I didn't train myself?"
"How would you learn how?"
Alice paused, deep in thought.
"Just admit it. You know who and what you are."
"I don't know if I'm the Fairy of Light, but things come to me. I have memories that aren't mine. When my mother died, she said she had something to give to me, but when I took her hand and asked what, she told me that I already had it."
"Why don't we have a little test?"
"What kind of test?" Jake asked.
"One to see if she is the Fairy of Light. Let's go outside and have a little battle. The strongest fairies against her in a battle."
"But she-"
"It's alright, Jake. I can do this. If not...well then we know I'm not the Fairy of Light."
Half an hour later, Alice was outside. There was 12 people surounding her in a circle which included Kayla, Maddie, and Angelica (her room mates).
"Alice, you sure you want to do this?" Jake was outside of the circle looking in.
"Yep."
"Are you ready?" The headmaster asked.
"Yep. Start whenever."
Everybody stood still for a moment. Then one fairy attacked, sending a blast of fire. Alice bent backwards and quickly turned, spinning her hands in a circle. The fire blast circle back towards the owner who stopped it seconds before it hit her.
Next, they all attacked at once, but Alice dodged gracefully, slipping through the blasts. Not a single one came close to hitting her. She jumped and bent and twisted around all of the blasts, sometimes sending some back.
"Attack already!" A fairy yelled.
Alice stopped moving, her arms spread out wide. The other fairies continued their attack, all aiming at Alice.
"ALICE!" Jake cried out. "That's enough!"
"Jake, it'll be fine. I can take care of myself." The blast all hit Alice causing smoke to form. When it cleared, Alice was laying on the ground.
"ALICE!" He started to enter the circle, but was stopped by two other warriors. "Stop this, headmaster. This isn't proving anything."
Suddenly, Alice's body was lifted up in the air, spinning air going faster and faster. Then it stopped and a bright white glow outlined her body. She was set on her feet and when she opened her eyes, the white glow brighten, making everyone nearby look away.
When the light went back to normal. Alice's hair had turned to a beach blonde color and her brown eyes were know blue. Her skin had changed to a light cream color.
"Alice?"
"She was right. I AM the Fairy of Light. I know everything all the other Fairies of Light did. I know how to control this."
"Then fight us." Another fairy yelled.
The fairies once again attacked Alice all at once, but this time Alice raised her hands, stopping all the blasts at once. She lifted her hands and threw all the blasts back to their owner who didn't have time to stop them. They all fell down.
Jake shook off the other warriors and raced to Alice.
"You did it. You are the Fairy of Light."
A few minutes later, Alice stayed outside to collect her thoughts as everybody else went inside. She was just starting to go in when a movement at the edge of the woods caught her attention. Walking closer to the trees, she kept her body tense.
"Hello?"
"Hey, there." The person walked out from behind the trees and it took all of Alice's willpower not to drop her jaw. The person looked exsactly like Jake, but why Jake had a nice calming ara around him, this guy's was mean and evil. "I'm guessing Jake didn't tell you about me."
"W-who are you?"
"I'm Thomas, Jake's twin brother."
"I didn't know he had a brother."
"What else could we be? We look so much alike."
"Clones?"
He laughed. "No, my dear, there is no way we are clones."
"Well, I heard of a lot of weird things lately. Um, why are you here?"
"To see you."
"Why?"
"In case you haven't figured it out, I work for the Witch of Darkness."
"Who?"
"The one who wishes to kill you. We have been eneimes sense the begining of time." The voice came from inside her head and sounded a lot like her mother's.
"How are you doing that?" Alice asked, keeping her eyes on Thomas at all times.
"He isn't. We are the other Fairies of Light. We have given you our wisdom."
"Doing what?"
"Oh...nothing."
"Hearing voices in your head?"
"Don't let him know about us."
"What do you want?" Alice questioned Thomas.
"I just came to the little show you just put on. I've been watching you very, very closely." He stepped towards her.
"Get away from her, Thomas!" A voice behind Alice yelled.
"My dear, dear brother, you should know I never do as I'm told." Smiling devilously, he leaned toward Alice and brushed his lips across her cheek. Then Alice's world was blurring and she was falling.
"Alice. Alice, wake up." A voice kept saying. Then before she could open her eyes she was splashed with a big bubble of water.
Sputtering, she sat up and saw Maddie standing over her.
"Good, you're up. Now, come on. Jake's been hurt."
That got Alice up. She raced inside the school, straight for the infirmary. Once there she saw Jake sitting on a bed, his head in a big wrap.
"Oh, my God. How'd this happen? Was it Thomas?"
Jake looked up. "How do you feel?"
"You sitting in the infirmary and you're asking how I feel? Jesh. I'm fine. How do you feel?"
"I've been better. They are going to attack us at dawn. You should go get some sleep."
"Are you staying here for the night?"
"Yeah. Take care of yourself, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. I know."
Once in her room, Alice saw that Maddie, Angelica, and Kayla had all settled down for bed. She sat down on her bed, leaning her back against the head rest.
"Are you still there?" Alice whispered.
"We never left you. We are a part of you."
"Who is the Witch of Darkness?"
"She is like a Fairy of Light, but she is the strongest witch. She is very evil. You must not let her win tomorrow."
"How can I stop her?"
"You must decide that for yourself. You choices are going to affect us, but you are in command. We can not tell you what to do or how to act."
"How will I know what's right?"
"You will know."
"But what if I make a mistake?"
"We all do at some point in life. We do not wish for someone so young to fight against the Witch of Darkness without a daughter to pass the power onto, but we don't have a choice."
"I'm sorry, but I'm only 17. Call me old-fashioned, but I wish to be married before having kids."
"That is the way it should be. Now you should get some sleep. You'll need it."
"Wait, I have one more question. Is my mother in there?"
"Of course, I am, my love. I have been watching you over the years. You have made me very proud. I only wished I could have been there for you."
"You are now."
The next morning, Jake stormed into Alice's room. She laid on her bed, looking so peaceful.
"Alice. Wake up. They're here."
"Mmmm. Who's here?"
"The witches. They said if we turned you over, then they would kill us quickly. They want to wipe out all of the fairies and warriors."
Alice yawned and stood up. "Okay, I'm up. Let me get changed and I go help win the war."
Jake left and Alice quickly headed to her closet filled with clothes that were hers, but was not hers. She picked out a pair of white pants and a tight-fitting black tank top. Then Alice slid on a pair of black lace up boots. Finally, she headed outside.
Once outside she saw that everybody was fighting. She could tell the fairies from the witches by their clothes. The fairies were wearing bright skirts, shorts, jeans, and dresses while the witches were wearing the same except theirs were dark colors.
"You have to help them."
"How? I don't see the Witch of Darkness anywhere."
reconize her dark energy."
Alice did as they asked and she was able to detect a dark evil power a few feet away from her. She ran to it, weaving her way through the people, helping when she had the chance.
The Witch of Darkness was wearing all black. She had black hair, black eyes, black fingernails, and dark eye make-up.
When Alice started walking to her, she turned around and smiled cruelly. Thomas was instantly by the witch's side. Jake appeared by Alice at the same time.
"So this is it." The witch said.
"Appears so."
"Kill her. Kill her. Kill her. KILL HER!" The voices in Alice's head grew louder and louder, making her head pound.
"I suppose I can offer you my name since I already know yours." She smiled once more. "I'm Ashley."
"Such a nice name for one who is said to be evil."
"KILL HER!"
"Said to be evil. Oh, darlin', I am evil. You can say so otherwise, but you will be killed in the end."
"Funny. I was about to say the same thing."
Ashley snarled and attacked Alice the same time Thomas attacked his brother. Ashley was faster than the fairies, but Alice was able to anticipate her every move from what the other Fairies of Light told her.
First, Ashley went low and swung her feet at Alice's. When that didn't work she puched Alice's stomach, making her bow down. Alice quickly stood back up and delievered a blow at Ashley's face.
While Ashley was still recovering from the blow, Alice pulled a knife from her boot and grabbed Ashley's neck from behing, bringing the knife around to the base of Ashley's neck.
"Kill her. While you have her at an advantage."
"No, it's not right."
"Are you talking to yourself now?"
"Stay out of it, witch."
"What will you do about it?"
"Kill her. She has killed before. Is that right?"
"You don't want to know. I could end your life right now."
"But you won't." She said as Alice shifted the knife closer to her neck.
"Why not?"
"Look at your boyfriend. He's not doing so well."
Alice looked at Jake. He was wrapped up in his brother's arms, Thomas's arm choking the air from him.
"Tell him to release Jake."
"Not before you...kill me."
Alice was startled. "Why? Don't you want me to let you go?"
"No, I'm tired of being told what to do by the voices in my head. They tell me to kill you. I was a good kid before my mother died. After that, all I thought about was vengence and Thomas helped me, but in my heart I wish to die. I don't wish to kill you."
"But why? We have been fighting each other for centries."
"No, we haven't. The other people were. We don't have to do this. Kill me. End this war before they take control of me."
"They can do that?"
"Of course we can." The voices said from inside Alice's head. "Why do you think your heart still hurts? We made a bargin with the Healer and she left the darkness inside you still."
Alice started to release Ashley when a enourmous amount of energy made her tighten her grip.
"We have waited a long time to kill you, Witch of Darkness. You have killed us, but we live through this girl." Alice was forced to say.
From the cornor of her eyes, Alice saw Thomas release Jake. He took a huge breath of air and looked up at her. It was then that the force making her do things started to slip.
"Alice, come back." It started slipping more and more. "Come back to me. I love you."
Alice slammed against the force with everything she had in her. It broke and she quickly release Ashley.
"ENOUGH! This is my body. Get out!" Alice fell to her knees, with relief, as she felt the other precences leave her body.
"Why didn't you kill me?"
Alice looked up. "You were right. It is our choice. We have a chance to stop this war so why don't we?"
"NOOOO! You're supposed to kill each other! Do it, do it now." Thomas yelled.
"No, this war is over." Ashley stated.
"It will never be over." He walked towards Alice. "You may have thought you won, but this isn't over. There is darkness in everything, including light. There is no light in darkness, however."
"We can make a light if only we choose to do so."
"Some things will have no hope of a chance which includes light and darkness getting along. This isn't over. It's just the begining." He disappeared into thin air.
"He's right, Alice. We have no hope of becoming friends so don't expect it of me. I am a witch. I will always be a witch. Nothing you can do or say will change that." Her voice became harsh, rude. "Witches, to our school."
Half of the people disappeared from outside, leaving only stunned fairies and warriors.
"Yeah! You did it, Alice." Kayla yelled.
"Yah! Go, Alice, it's your birthday!"
Everybody laughed and started fileing back into the school. Soon only Jake and Alice remained.
"You did it."
"Nope. We did it."
Jake grabbed Alice's hand and they started walking into the school.
"I still can't believe it."
Alice sighed, shaking her head. "Oh, my little vampire, it's true."
"Who you callin' little? I am a big, lean fighting machine." He raced his hands over his head as if to prove his point.
"Yeah and I'm a tree." She said, poking his stomach and taking off running.
Jake laughed and chased after her. He knew they would be happy and he would do everything in his power to protect her from the dangers to come.
THE END
