Sometimes I see the internet and I weep. I weep for humanity. I weep for English. For all I see is a bunch of people who had to pay a little more attention in Elementary English classes. I, for one, am an advocate of the theory that your Mother tongue needs to be spoken, read, and written by everyone. But do not get me wrong. I do not condemn people who are not able to do these. Maybe they did not have the opportunity. I am a Tamizhan (For non-speakers, a Tamil speaking person). For a long time, I could only speak Tamizh. But when I got the opportunity to learn to read and write, I took it. The reason I said that is because, I can also speak, read and write Hindi and, of course, English. And I believe that learning a language that is the unofficial "trade language" of the world is a must for everybody. That being said, I am going to give a few examples of the utter nonsense that I see on the internet. Sit back and scroll through the banality that is ensued. I promise you, it will be as ridiculous as advertised.
1.Yew- This is a "swag" version of You. What actually grinds my gears is the fact that there is no freaking difference in the number of letters. This can be seen posted by more and more of people who have not been taught the usage of capital letters.
Example, "YeW CAnT JUdgE mE".
2.Common- This is more of a rally cry. A cheer word. I asked one of my friends what it meant and he replied "Come On". This is not an intentional change of letters. But people sometimes actually think that the phrase "Come On" is actually a WORD.
Example, "Common guys. Let's win this gam"(game)
3.You're and Your- The former is a word that is followed by an adjective or a noun or a verb that will describe something/someone/some activity. The latter is a possession. It really pisses me off that people find correcting their grammar as "rude". I usually let them know personally rather than comment on the post so as to give them the chance to edit the post before everybody else starts to mock their inability to use a word.
And the last one that tops my list of "Internet Murder of English"
4. SWAG and YOLO- This is not a word that is spelt in a wrong way but this is more of a pubescent, stupid, teenage idiosyncrasy. I am 20 years old. I am going to be in a job in a few months and I cannot help but think what will happen when these people are asked to write an essay on a basic topic when they are in college or when they are attending a job interview!
I can only imagine reading an essay that starts with "Yo man Listen up!" and ending with "Peace Bitches!"
God Save English. God Save Us from these idiots!!
Thank You!
