She was late as usual. Kaavish would be furious by now. He had said 6.30pm sharp. And it was 7.15pm now. Why cant boys understand that girls need time to get ready? On her way to the decided venue, which was an open garden with fountains and swings, she switched her ipod on and the song “ tera hone laga hoon” started playing. This song had a special importance in her life…
Kaavish was so shy when they had first met, that he couldn’t even look into her eyes and ask her her name. She, on the other hand, was a cool kind of girl. Pretty smart too. So she had introduced herself.
“hi! I am Nidhi. And you are?”
“hello! Kaavish”
And since that day, they had gradually become best of friends. They used to study together, go for shopping, long bike rides. Eventually Nidhi had realized that she was falling for him. But his actions always confused her. He was never so expressive. One day, they had gone for a movie. Kaavish got up and said that he was going to the washroom. He didn’t come back for a while, it was then when she noticed that he had left a letter on his seat for her.
“ Dear Nidhi,
I don’t know how you feel about me. But I am going mad about you. You are the sweetest girl I have ever met. If you don’t feel the same about me, then forget about this letter and we will resume back to our friendship, because I cant afford to lose you. If your heart has some place for me in it then please look under my seat”
She had found a teddy under the seat, and when she had pressed the button on his tummy, it sang
“tera hone laga hoon, khone laga hoon, jabse mila hoon”
That day, when she had almost given up on this shy, idiot guy, he had proposed her.
Nidhi was in the park by now. She searched for Kaavish and saw him sitting by the water pool. He saw her and his anger was evident form his face. She ran to him and before he knew, she placed a kiss on his cheeks.
“sorry yaar! Forgive me for this last time.” She smiled her girlish, two dimples, smile.
And he couldn’t hide the glimpse of a smile that was on his face by now.
“You do this all the time Nidhi! You girls always use your cute gestures as a shield! You know that how much I miss you all day. And still you make me suffer.”
Her heart skipped a couple of beats on his innocent confession. She hugged him tight and she knew that this boy was the loveliest thing that had ever happened to her. He was quite taller than her and her ears could hear his heart beats. Love is the greatest gift anyone could ever have.
“Nidhi!!! Nidhi!!! Wake up!!! The librarian has been eyeing you since 15mins!” Shefali was trying her best not to shout.
Nidhi opened her eyes and the reality dawned to her. She had fallen asleep on her books. That dream was over since 2 years now. Kaavish had called her one day and said that maybe they had rushed into things too fast, that he had aims that needed full concentration and so he didn’t want any distractions. And within seconds she had realized that he had fallen out of love. It had taken her a couple of months to absorb that they were never friends, never lovers and all she was to him was a “distraction”…
Her eyes couldn’t contain the tears anymore. Why do we dream about things that could never be. She had a fairytale. And now she knew that she might fall in love again, but it would never be the same. She wished that dream would go on forever. Time couldn’t erase him from her heart. But she had been brave then. She had left him smoothly and never even considered bothering him again because she had realized that the time of their love was over and nothing would change that. And since then they have been just “strangers”.
