Forgotten

She walked up the path of her old high school, keeping her head down, not wanting to walk into anyone she used to know. She was a new person now, but to be able to have changed she had to leave everything she knew behind, her friends, her house, her self...She couldn't have any lose string that could allow her to climb back into that world. The world she will never go back to.

As the exit began to near she started to feel relief, she had gone through the whole reunion without talking to anyone. She still didn't fully understand why she went, she didn't talk to anyone nor planned on doing so, she didn't care about the speech or the anything that happened in the reunion. The reason she went is much simpler, but she will never admit that she came for him. Deep down she know that the curiosity was too much, deep down she felt that maybe if they happened to bump into each other things could be different. But she knew it was wrong, going there was wrong, hoping to find him was wrong, hoping she could go back to that time was very, very wrong.

The gates were already in her field of vision, she would be able to go home rest this nightmare of and never think of this place or of these people again. She kept looking down, focusing on her feet, one before the other, a repetitive motion that would soon end this. And then suddenly her shoulder collides with that of another and her concentration is gone. She looks up to find a boy who she has never seen before, he quickly apologizes and walks away, she is stuck there almost paralyzed. She feels as if everyone is looking at here, which most likely isn't true. She turns back around and is ready to resume her walking when she sees him.

His blue eyes look ahead, his brown hair hidden under a beanie that i remember all too well. He stands tall with a friendly smile on his face walking down the path exactly like he did all those years ago. I can't help but stare at this boy, this boy who was so friendly to me, this boy who showed me how to love, how to feel, this boy who made me the happiest girl in the world. This boy who gave me all his love and never let me down. This boy who I broke...

He looks up in my direction and his smile brightness even more, he waves and for a second, just a second, I think he is waving at me. I am about to wave back when he walks right passed me, without even noticing me. I beg myself not to turn around but I can't help it, I look back and see him run up to a girl. She is tall, slim, her long brown hair fall down her shoulder, her bright hazel eyes tear up as she sees him. As they embrace I can’t help but wince, I knew this would happen, I had heard that he had gotten a girlfriend, I had seen pictures, but I still came and tortured myself. I want to stop, stop looking at them, stop thinking about them, about what they do, about the sweet things that he tells her, but she can’t. Every second feels like knives in her heart, they pull apart and look at each other, anyone who saw them right now would know how perfect they are for each other, they would see the pure love in their eyes.

Before I know it their lips lock, all the air is gone from my lungs and I can’t breathe, all I can do is watch. I watch as they passionately kiss under the shade of the tree as the autumn leaves fall upon them. I feel the tears run down my check before I can comprehend what is happening. All the memories, all the moments, all the love that she once shared with him was gone, and now he was with someone who would never do what she did. He was with someone who will love him and be with him forever. The pain is so intense she fall to my knees, people approach me, try to help me get up, they ask me questions but she can’t hear them, she can’t hear anything except the beautiful words he is telling the girl he loves, the words of promise. They hug one last time, he takes her hand and they walk together down that path, past me, and out the gates.

She is left there for a second, the people who offered to help her before have disappeared. She gets up shakily and breathes, she tries to compose herself, whips the tears off her cheeks, straightens her dress, fixes her hair, and walks out the gate. She sits in her car and thinks, thinks about what she did, about all she left behind, about how he has moved on and found love. As she starts to drive away she realizes that she has become what she has always wanted to be, what she ran away to be, what she hoped for when she left. She looks in her rearview mirror and watches as the school gets smaller, and smaller, until it is no longer there, and she smiles sadly at the thought that she has finally been forgotten.
