Gilded Wishes

As a kid, I've always been fascinated with Barbie and the Twelve Dancing Princesses. That island they dance to freely was such a magical place I'd desired to go. Their unique dancing shoes were like expensive toys I could only look outside boutiques. And those nights of magic and dancing were a secret every princess kept securely in their hearts. Never once daring to utter a word of it for fear of the magic disappearing.

My little sister and I would always love to play pretend like the dancing princesses. We'd skip from floor tile to floor tile; imagining that they were etched with pretty paintings of flowers. My flower was an orchid.

In that magical island where the princesses go to at night, golden flowers bloomed and showered you in stardust every time your wish is granted. And isn't it curious why everything related to wishes is streaked in gold? Gold is malleable, ever-shifting, and highly precious. I guess wishes are the same in that way too. As kids, we would wish for riches and every unattainable item this material world could provide us. But as we grow older, we only crave for bringing back the past, for undoing all our regrets. Unfortunately, wish-granting flowers don't exist.
