How To Prepare Your Condo For Hosting A Poetry Reading

Poetry is a form of written expression that harnesses emotion. Readings of these works give the writers a unique opportunity to share their feelings and get feedback from other artists. As many people who feel deeply are typically introverts, it can be difficult getting them out into the real world to socialize and see what others are doing. Poetry readings provide a comfortable space to listen to what projects other artists are working on, catch up with familiar faces, or even meet new people in the community. No need to find a venue, hosting a poetry reading a swanky new condo can be a rewarding and fun way to bring art into your home, but the first step is to make the room fit the mood.

Upgrade The Seating Area In Your Condo

Your new living room may be functional, but that doesn't always translate to a comfortable area for people to put their hearts on their sleeves. Make sure couches and chairs have arms for guests to rest on and have a team of blankets ready (in addition to extra tissues). Retire the bland polyester couch cover for a deep jewel-toned knit throw made from soft cotton. Add one or two fuzzy pillows in the mix for readers who like to fidget.

Display Favorite Artwork In Your Condo

Brand new walls weren't installed to frame your living room just to stay bare. Hang up a favorite framed piece or woven tapestry, anything that strikes you as inspirational from a first glance. If you have a mantle, you can learn letters, postcards from loved ones, or photographs you've taken along your journeys. A good talking piece like these can be an ice breaker for a newbie who is still too shy to share or maybe a favorite artist is something you had in common with a fellow poet, and you never knew.

Lay Down Cozy Rugs On The Floor

A lot of flooring in newer built condominiums come with a tile or wood panel flooring. While a beautiful detail, a poetry reading needs a cozy environment to make guests feel at ease. Dust off those rugs in storage you collected in Costa Rica or headed to your favorite natural furniture store to pick up a few knitted or fuzzy area rugs to strategically place around the common area where the readings will take place.

Get The Lighting Just Right

Ditch the harsh overhead light and replace the bulbs in them with warm toned LED light bulbs that may be just for the night or for good. Switch on the twinkling string lights, scatter the room with favorite candles and maybe light calming incense. If you usually have sheer linen curtains on your windows, consider switching them out for crushed velvet drapes. Not only will these make the room look romantic and cozy, but it will also insulate the room better on a cold night and make emotional readers feel safe.
