The life of an Anomaly

Have you ever just sat down and thought about what life is all about? Well I have and other than the usual school college work then die philosophy a lot of things suddenly became clearer but I won’t bore you with what you have already classified as the thoughts of a child who knows nothing about life, I’m going to tell you a story it might make it easier for you, a wiser person, to understand.

This story isn’t one of the stories you hear everyday this is a different kind of story. It all starts when a small 8 year old boy moves to Egypt now this boy was different; he liked to believe in people, no matter what people told him about them. See this boy grew up in a school where he was bullied for being weird were he didn’t have any friends but fortunately for him he didn’t realize what he was missing out on or that people weren’t supposed to treat him like that for this boy believed that people were good that the was the way people were treated. I think the word you would use to describe this boy would be naïve however I like to think he was one of the few innocent kids of his generation. Unfortunately for him he was deeply in love it took him 3 years to talk to her and when he did she was all he could think of, so like all men everything he did the following year was to try to impress her even if he hated what he was doing. One of those things is getting to know the people she liked even though to him they seemed like a waste of space now I know what you’re thinking and in his defense all they talked about was sport shoes or cars, stuff he thought didn’t deserve the time that was spent on it especially since all his parents were talking about was Palestine and important stuff. The truly peculiar part of this story is that even though he was 14 and never had any friends he didn’t have trouble getting people to open up to him even though all his life he was either bullied or humiliated. Eventually one of them asked the question he was waiting to answer since the day he started talking to them “Who do you like?” to which he proudly responded with her full name. Being the experts that all kids are they convinced him to ask her to be his valentine, which was pretty stupid considering she barely knew who he was. Anyway It wasn’t until after he got his heart crushed did he start to realize something wasn’t right, her friends got mad at him why? Because he stopped talking to them, see he thought they were thinking “good riddance” and that they weren’t mad at him on the contrary they were pushing him away to make sure he doesn’t think they were ever friends.

Lets fast forward almost 4 years into the future the same boy is a secretariat in his school’s MUN and even though he had never been to a session he was able to organize one and with the help of his council it was perfect. The reason why this is important isn’t because everyone thought he knew exactly what he was doing or that he was able to conduct games although he always had a this sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that at some point someone was going to crush the idea in his head that people might actually like him. The truly amazing part happens when one of the secretariats was giving a speech about authority and the boy stands up and says “I don’t think all of you understand that in 50 years there isn’t going to be an older generation in charge in 50 years you’re going to be in charge of this country and in 50 years there is going to be a class full of people just like this talking about your accomplishments and it’s up to you to decide what they say.” He didn’t expect the silence that followed or the looks he got from the other secretariats; he expected his words to be discarded so he sat down and waited for the silence to pass because this boy is a simple minded boy. It was one of the many things he thought about that he thought only made sense to him the kind of things only crazy people would actually say out loud. The days go by and this boy meets a girl and this girl isn’t like anyone he’s ever met she doesn’t go by the same rules she was brought up in a totally different world. Even though everyone told him not to trust her he told her everything she wanted to know so naturally she told him everything about her. No, she didn’t do it because she was trying to be polite like the boy thought, it was because she found someone she can trust someone who wasn’t going to use her misery as a story to get his friends to laugh, a genuinely good person. He really liked this girl at one point he thought he might fall for her but she only liked him and he never really understood the difference. This girl was the first person he met that actually had something to say something that would make him think but he never connected the dots he never realized that the things she was saying meant that she could never be in an actual relationship with someone, he didn’t realize that even though he told her everything she wanted to know he still hadn’t told her anything about who he thought he was even though she had told him everything about herself he understood too late that she wasn’t interested in him she was interested in telling her story and that when she’s done, what they had are only memories he can think about when he’s too old to do anything else.

Fortunately time never stops and it wasn’t until one of his delegates stood in front of a class and told them about a phrase that changed her, the one he said in the session, did his climb out of depression start. It wasn’t until the girl told him that he was one of the few people she cared about did he realize that he had an impact on peoples’ lives. It wasn’t until his best friend told him she might like girls did he realize that people depended on him to make things okay that he had an impact on people’s lives that some people were actually glad he was there. It wasn’t until someone totally trusted him did he finally realize that it wasn’t normal that he was philosophical that he was in a way unique however unlikely that may seem. Finally after he was having one of those nights when he was thinking about everything the kind of thinking that if said out loud might turn people insane did he realize something that he thought was the purpose of all those phases of depression all teenagers go through he finally realized that he was someone to remember.
