You know how people have always told you that doctors know everything? Well, we kind of have to know everything. And that doesn't just come to us through our genes. Starting from 1st year we stay up late. And I am not saying late as in 2 or 3 in the morning.. I am saying till 7 in the morning or more, not like we count. We become sleep deprived, critical of our every move and more aware of our capabilities.
In the final exams of my 1st year M.B.B.S., I stayed up all night and studied till 8:30am only to give exams at 9:00am. That's how we become. Well, that's just the beginning. I am not complaining and that's where it all gets weird for non- medicos. I don't wish to change it, I don't wish to change my sleep cycle (sometimes not all the time), the tension, the last minute panic attacks before going for vivas, the prayers following a huge mistake in the answer sheet, the acidity which I develop every morning after a sleepless night (well, it's not that bad).
I love these things. We go through all of the above and more to become someone who you can rely your life on. And that is a big deal, a very big deal. So, you see it's not like we know everything from the very beginning, we earn it, we give everything to become someone who will actually be worthy of your trust.
An incident that took place in a COVID- 19 ward on my first day as the on- call doctor.
